As the year comes to a close, we’re thrilled to celebrate 60 years of HMR Architects and our work in architecture and historic preservation. Over the past months, we’ve shared some of our favorite projects, and for this final 60th anniversary post, we’re highlighting barns, an important part of New Jersey’s history.

We’ve been fortunate to document, repair, and restore historic barns across the state, including several rare Dutch-style examples. Each project is unique, but our approach is the same: we honor the original materials, craftsmanship, and stories of these buildings while ensuring they remain strong for decades to come. By preserving these barns, we help keep New Jersey’s agricultural heritage alive

Last week our office visited Jersey City to see several ongoing and past projects. The trip included a tour of the renovation at Loew’s Jersey Theatre, where we were able to see plaster ceiling repairs and decorative painting up close. We also visited the William J. Brennan Courthouse to view exterior restoration work now nearing completion, including a trip to the roof to see the restored sheet metal cupola. The visit also included a stop at the Apple Tree House, offering a look back at a project completed over several phases between 2007 and 2017.

Wishing everyone a happy and healthy holiday season and all the best in the year ahead!

HMR is honored to have received awards last Thursday night at the 2025 New Jersey Historic Preservation Awards for our work with the Monmouth County Park System on the rehabilitation of the Historic Racing Stable at Thompson Park, and with The Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms on the rehabilitation of the Annex and restoration of the kitchen.

An Honorable Mention for Preservation Stewardship was awarded to Anne Wright Wilson and Hopewell Special, LLC for the Runyon Farmstead Development Project. We’re also thrilled to celebrate our own Thomas Sheridan, AIA, recipient of the Young Preservationist Award.

Thank you again PNJ for an incredible night!
