We remember the Heroes and those lost 25 years ago

On September 11, 2001, the FDNY carried out an extraordinary response to the attacks on the World Trade Center.

In total, 121 engine companies and 62 ladder companies were dispatched, along with fire officers and specialized units. As the scale of the disaster became clear, off-duty firefighters were called back and the department mobilized nearly every resource it could.

By the end of the day, 343 members of the FDNY had been killed. The losses touched every level of the department, including Chief of Department Peter J. Ganci Jr., First Deputy Commissioner William M. Feehan, assistant chiefs, fire marshals, chaplains and firefighters from companies across New York City.

Seventy-five firehouses lost at least one member, while some companies suffered multiple deaths. Families lost fathers, sons, brothers and husbands. The FDNY lost men who ran directly toward the danger while countless others were desperately trying to escape it.

The toll did not end on September 11. In the years since, hundreds more FDNY members have died from illnesses connected to their work at Ground Zero, and their names continue to be added to the department’s memorial.
