Every July I see gardeners rushing to the garden center for sprays and quick fixes.
And I get it. Something is eating your plants and you want it to stop.
But here's what 15 years of organic gardening in Houston has taught me — by the time you're reacting, the window has already passed.
The gardens that sail through summer pest season aren't lucky. They were set up differently in spring. The right flowers to invite beneficial insects. The right spacing for airflow. The right soil to grow plants strong enough to recover.
That system is what I break down in this week's episode — what it actually looks like, what pests I'm dealing with in my own garden right now, and the three steps I take before I ever reach for anything.

Houston gardeners — June is NOT too late to plant. 🌱

After a very rainy May and a surprisingly long spring, summer is finally here in full force.


That means it’s time to lean into the heat-loving crops — the ones that actually thrive when Houston feels like a sauna. 😅

If you have empty bed space right now, don’t leave it bare. You can still plant plenty and harvest abundance this season.

What to plant in June:

🌿 Okra
🍠 Sweet potatoes
🌶️ Peppers
🍆 Eggplant
🥒 Cucumbers
🫘 Southern peas / yardlong beans
🌿 Basil
🌸 Zinnias, sunflowers, cosmos, and other pollinator-friendly flowers

This is not the season to fight the heat with cool-weather crops.

It’s the season to plant what loves the heat, mulch well, water deeply, and keep your garden productive through summer.

Some moments you don’t just remember — you carry them with you. 🌿
It started at home — little hands pulling stems from our own garden, making mama a bouquet straight from the earth.
Then we took it to the Mother’s Day wellness walk, where I got to show families how to put together a herb garden built to thrive in our Houston heat. Watching mamas and kids get their hands in the soil together, choosing plants, asking questions, getting excited about growing their own food — that’s everything.
A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth. Your curiosity, your smiles, your kids dragging you over to touch the plants — it made every moment worth it. 🙏🏽
This is why I believe the garden is one of the most powerful things we can give our families. It teaches patience. It teaches care. It shows our children that beautiful things grow when you tend to them — and so do we.
Wishing every mama a warm and belated Happy Mother’s Day. You are so loved. 🌸
