One of my favorite things about this time of year is seeing just how many garden goodies I can tuck into one arrangement. 🌻🌿

This one came together with so many different flowers, colors and textures straight from the backyard. I love letting whatever is blooming inspire each arrangement, so no two ever turn out quite the same. 💛

I’ll have a few fresh garden arrangements available Friday!

🌸 This Week in the Garden

There’s always something happening out here, so I thought it might be fun to start sharing a little look at what I’m working on each week!
Right now I’m somewhere between keeping the summer garden going and already thinking ahead to spring. 🌱

🌸 Hand-pollinating some of my favorite zinnias and experimenting with a few crosses for future seasons

🌸 Pulling old, tired zinnias and planting out baby zinnias to keep the season going

🌸 Harvesting LOTS of gomphrena for my dried-flower stash

🌸 Sowing another succession of sunflowers

🌸 Baby cosmos are ready to go, but I’m holding them back until it cools down a little — hopefully they’ll go into the garden next week

🌸 Getting ready to start my first round of cool-season flowers — but not quite yet!
We’re still hitting the 100s this week, so I’m waiting out this heat wave before starting those seeds. Next week is looking a little cooler, and I’m hoping to get that first round going then. 🌱

That’s one thing you’ll hear me say a lot: watch the weather, not just the calendar. Southeast Texas seasons don’t always cooperate with the dates we have planned. 😂

And of course, there will be plenty of weeding, cutting, deadheading and trying not to melt in the meantime. 🥵

One of my favorite things about gardening is that you’re always working in more than one season at once. I’m still harvesting summer flowers while already planning and preparing for next spring.

🌸 Want a spring flower garden like this? 🌸

If you live in Southeast Texas, you know gardening here can feel a little… different. 😂

We have the heat. The humidity. The random freezes. And sometimes it feels like all those gorgeous spring flowers you see growing in other parts of the country just aren't meant for us.

But they are. 🌷

Ranunculus. Anemones. Snapdragons. Larkspur. Orlaya. Nigella. Statice. Scabiosa. Rudbeckia. And so many more.

I've spent the last several years growing cut flowers right here in Pearland, Texas — figuring out what works in our climate, what doesn't, and how to get some of those beautiful spring flowers growing in a Southeast Texas backyard.

So I put what I've learned into something I wish I'd had when I started:

🌸 Do you wiggle your zinnias before you cut them?

If you grow zinnias for the vase, this little test can save you from a whole lot of floppy flower heads.

I use the wiggle test every time I harvest — and it only takes a second. You can also use this trick when harvesting rudbeckias!

Such a simple little thing, but it makes a big difference when you're cutting flowers for the vase. ✂️🌸

🌸 Just TWO garden-fresh arrangements available today! 🌸

There’s a lot that happens between growing a flower in the garden and handing you a finished arrangement — and I believe those little details matter.

Every bloom is grown, carefully selected and handled with intention so you’re taking home beautiful, garden-fresh flowers prepared for a longer vase life. Not every stem makes the cut, and that’s intentional. I’m picky about what goes into a Meg’s Backyard Blooms arrangement because around here, it’s quality over quantity — always. 💕

A little peek at what’s coming out of the garden this week 🌸

The zinnias are showing off, the marigolds are just getting started, and I’ve got lots of fun little textures to play with. I’m loving this mix of soft pinks, creamy yellows and those first hints of warmer fall color. 🥰

I’ll be making a limited number of arrangements for tomorrow! 💐

Everything is garden fresh, harvested right here in my backyard and properly conditioned before it makes its way into your arrangement.

Flowers can’t fix the hard things. ❤️

This arrangement was made for someone who had recently lost her father in law. I filled it with flowers from my garden and delivered it to her myself.

When she saw it, she smiled. And that little moment has stuck with me.

I love growing beautiful flowers, but getting to use them to bring someone even the smallest bit of comfort on a really hard day means so much more. 🌻❤️

This is why I grow flowers.

August isn’t always pretty. 😂🌿

This time of year in the garden is all about pulling dead or tired plants, cutting things WAY back, and cleaning up what the summer heat has worn out.
My apple mint was definitely ready. 😂

I let this patch flower all summer and the pollinators had an absolute field day with it. 🐝🦋 But now that it’s finished blooming, it had gone to seed and gotten super woody.

So yesterday it got a buzz cut. ✂️😂
I cut the whole patch almost to the ground in hopes of encouraging a fresh flush of soft green mint that I can use in my fall arrangements.

There’s a lot of this happening in the backyard right now—tired plants coming out, others getting cut way back, and young plants going in to carry the garden into fall. 🌱

It may not be the prettiest part of growing flowers, but it’s part of the process.

Anyone else’s garden looking a little rough around the edges this August? 😂

🌸 The zinnia matchmaking has officially begun! 😂

I’ve talked before about wanting to try my hand at breeding my own zinnias, and I’ve officially narrowed down the crosses I’m working with this year!

One of my biggest goals is color AND form. I absolutely love the petite zinnias with those cute little rounded flowers, and I want to see if I can bring more colors into that form.

My dream? A little round Toffee-colored zinnia. 🤎😍

So, I’ve chosen five crosses, each for a reason:

🌸 Dawn Creek Toffee × Windfall Pink
Playing with Toffee and pink tones while looking for beautiful form and color.

🌸 Dawn Creek Toffee × Queen Lime Blush
I’d love to see what happens with those buff, blush and lime tones — especially with Lime Blush's incredibly full, rounded form.

🌸 Queen Lime Blush × Benary’s Giant Wine
Give me the moody colors! 😂 Wine, mauve, antique rose... who knows what might show up.

🌸 Dawn Creek Toffee × Windfall Peach
This is a BIG one for my petite goal. I’m hoping eventually I can get those Toffee, caramel and peachy tones into that adorable smaller rounded form.

🌸 Floret Victorian Wedding × Windfall Peach
Another one focused heavily on the petite form! I'm hoping for soft cream, blush, peach and pink tones in those sweet little rounded flowers.

And I'm not only making crosses!
I also picked a handful of exceptional individual plants to self-pollinate — basically using the flower's own pollen so I can grow its babies and see which of those special traits show up again.
I’m saving seed from an incredible orange, this almost perfectly domed pink 😍, Queen Lime Blush, my favorite Dawn Creek Toffee, and a beautiful white zinnia I came across.

None of this means I'll get exactly what I'm imagining — zinnia genetics are full of surprises. It will take generations of growing, selecting and saving seeds to see where these lines go.

But that's what makes it so much fun.

Next year we get to meet the babies. 👀🌸

A little behind the flowers this Sunday morning. 💕

Meg’s Backyard Blooms is grown in my backyard, but more than anything, it’s being built right in the midst of motherhood.

I stepped away from my career to stay home and raise my three babies, and somewhere along the way, this little flower business started growing right alongside us. 🌸

There are flowers harvested before school drop-off, arrangements made during nap time, and messages answered between diaper changes, meals, baths, homework help, and everything else that comes with raising three little humans. In fact, as I’m writing this, I have a baby crawling all over me.

And, of course, there are plenty of little hands mixed into the flowers too.

Sometimes, you may even see one (or two… or three 😂) of them when you stop by to pick up your flowers.

This little business lets me build something I love while still being here for the reason I came home in the first place — them. 💕

One day I know I’m going to miss these little hands in my flowers. 🥹🌸
