This spring, A4E's partners were out in full force at two A4LE regional conferences, connecting with fellow architects, planners, educators, and industry leaders dedicated to shaping the future of learning environments.

Partner & Principal Rachel Adams represented A4E at the A4LE Southwest Region Conference in Las Vegas, while Partner & Principal Olivia Graf attended the A4LE Southern Region Conference in Austin, where conversations focused on transforming educational vision into high-performing spaces that support students, educators, and communities.

These gatherings serve as an important reminder of why we do this work. Great schools begin with thoughtful design, and the strongest outcomes emerge when architects, educators, and district leaders come together to share ideas, challenges, and opportunities.

We're excited to bring new insights back to our projects and clients, with more conference highlights and takeaways from the A4E team coming soon.

Rafa believes design has the power to inspire community, elevate quality of life, and bring people together. As we head into Memorial Day weekend, we're taking a moment to honor and remember those who served.

We're also excited to share that A4E summer hours are officially back for 2026! Starting Friday, May 22nd, the studio will be closing every other Friday through September 4th. Because great work deserves great rest, and we believe a team that gets to enjoy the sunshine comes back even more inspired.

Here's to long weekends, good weather, and the people who make this studio what it is. Wishing everyone a safe and meaningful Memorial Day.

From elementary schools designed around belonging to university research halls built for interdisciplinary discovery, the range of work on display at this year's AIA CAE Spring Conference was a good reminder of how much educational design has evolved.

Olivia Graf and Enrico Giori were in Seattle last week, taking it all in. The big throughline: the best learning environments aren't just functional. They're built around the people using them.

We're excited to share renderings from the Rio Real K-8 Campus Facilities Transformation, a project close to our hearts and one that reflects the kind of work we love doing most.

In partnership with Rio School District, the design concept for Rio Real asks a simple but powerful question: What if we could go to school in a forest?

That idea became the foundation for everything. The campus is organized around the layered experience of moving through a forest, with clearings for gathering, shaded places to pause, landmarks that anchor memory, and pathways that invite exploration. It's a campus designed to feel like a journey.

At the heart of it is a deep commitment to the students who will use these spaces every day. From flexible indoor-outdoor classrooms to a dedicated wellness center, a new library, a culinary arts program with an herb garden, and "The Perch," an elevated learning commons for middle schoolers with views across campus, every decision was made with their growth, curiosity, and well-being in mind.

This is what happens when a community comes together around a shared vision. We're grateful for our continued partnership with Rio School District and the trust they place in our team.

A4E’s Rafael Rocha attended the 2026 Green Schools Symposium at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles. Here are a few of his takeaways:

Sustainability and student well-being aren’t separate goals. A central theme of the day focused on closing the gap between eco-friendly campuses and spaces where students can truly thrive.

In the wake of the 2025 wildfires, disaster resiliency was front and center. Administrators shared real lessons learned and what those experiences mean for how schools should be designed and operated moving forward.

Across L.A. County, schools are actively exploring solutions like electrifying bus fleets and reducing energy use on campus. The symposium served as a strong reminder that sustainable schools aren’t a future goal, they’re a present priority.

At A4E, these are conversations we’re proud to be part of. Insights like Rafa’s continue to inform how we think about our work and the learning environments we design.
