You don’t want to find out your sump pump isn’t working in the middle of a storm. Here’s how to check it before it becomes a problem:

1️⃣ Find the sump pump pit (usually in the basement or crawlspace)
2️⃣ Lift the lid and take a look inside
3️⃣ Slowly pour in a bucket of water, just enough to make the float rise
4️⃣ Listen for the pump to kick on automatically
5️⃣ Go outside and check that water is draining away from the house

If the pump doesn’t start, sounds strange, or drains slowly, it might be time for a repair or replacement.
