Most cooling tower failures don't happen without warning. They happen because warning signs were missed, or because maintenance was deferred until it was too late.

Here are the 5 most common causes of cooling tower failure we see in the field:
1. Neglected fill media — degraded fill loses heat transfer efficiency and can collapse under load
2. Mechanical equipment wear — fans, gearboxes, and motors that miss scheduled PM eventually fail under peak demand
3. Structural deterioration — wood, FRP, and concrete components all require regular inspection to catch early decay
4. Biological fouling — biofilm and Legionella thrive in warm summer water without proper treatment protocols
5. Improper water chemistry — imbalanced chemistry accelerates scaling, corrosion, and biological growth simultaneously

The good news? All five are preventable with a consistent inspection and maintenance program. We wrote about each one in detail on our blog. Read it here: coolingtowersllc.com/top-5-causes-of-cooling-tower-failure-and-how-to-prevent-them

If you've never had a professional cooling tower inspection — or if it's been a few years — it helps to know what the process actually looks like before the crew arrives.

A professional inspection isn't just a visual walk-around. It's a systematic assessment of every major system in your tower: structural, mechanical, thermal, and safety. Our team documents findings in detail and walks facility managers through each issue, from critical repairs to items to watch on the next visit.

What typically triggers an inspection request:
→ Reduced cooling capacity or efficiency complaints
→ Unusual noises from mechanical equipment
→ Visible deterioration on structure or fill
→ Pre-season preparation
→ Post-storm assessment (especially important here on the Gulf Coast)

We wrote a full walkthrough of the inspection process on our blog. If you're not sure what a solid inspection looks like, it's worth a read before you schedule one. Read more here: coolingtowersllc.com/what-to-expect-during-a-cooling-tower-inspection

"We should probably get an inspection" is something we hear often. But many facility managers aren't sure what a professional inspection actually includes, or how to evaluate whether their current process is sufficient.

A thorough Cooling Towers LLC inspection covers:
Structural evaluation — wood, fiberglass, steel, and concrete components assessed for deterioration, load integrity, and service life
Mechanical review — fan assembly, gearbox, driveshaft, motor, and drift eliminators inspected to CTI standards
Fill and thermal components — condition and efficiency of fill media, nozzles, and distribution system
Basin and water system — basin cleanliness, water chemistry indicators, and signs of biological activity
Safety systems — LOTO compliance, access platform condition, and fall protection assessment

Everything discovered during the inspection is documented and reviewed with your team. No surprises, no upsells, just a clear picture of where your tower stands.

If it's been more than a year since your last inspection, let's schedule one: https://coolingtowersllc.com/services/cooling-tower-inspections | Call: (281) 484-2665

Hurricane season is here. Here's what happens when a cooling tower fan is left unlocked during high winds in a major storm: as wind speeds increase, the fan rotates freely (and at dangerous velocities). When wind loads flex the fan shroud into the rotating blades, the result is shattered fan assemblies, damaged gear reducers, and potentially irreparable shroud damage.

Our patented FanLock system prevents exactly this. It mechanically locks the fan assembly, stopping free rotation before it starts. It also provides true lockout/tagout functionality for maintenance safety year-round.

We offer free on-site demonstrations. If your facility hasn't evaluated FanLock yet — especially heading into storm season — now is the time.

As Gulf Coast temperatures climb, two silent problems are working against your cooling tower's efficiency: scaling and biofilm buildup.

Scaling forms when dissolved minerals in the water precipitate out and coat heat transfer surfaces, reducing efficiency and forcing your system to work harder for the same output. Biofilm is a layer of microbial growth that coats fill media and basin surfaces, creating both an efficiency drag and a potential Legionella risk.

Both accelerate in summer. Both are preventable with proper maintenance.

Warning signs to watch for right now:
✔ Visible white or gray mineral deposits on fill or distribution nozzles
✔ Reduced system cooling capacity despite normal water flow
✔ Unusual odors coming from the basin or fill section
✔ Higher than normal water consumption (scaling reduces efficiency, increasing makeup water)

We put together a full guide on this on our blog. Read it here: https://coolingtowersllc.com/how-to-spot-and-prevent-scaling-and-biofilm-in-your-cooling-tower. If you're seeing any of these signs, our team can help.

If your tower hasn't been inspected since winter or spring, now is the time. Here's what peak summer demand can reveal:

→ Fill media that's degraded or fouled, reducing heat transfer efficiency
→ Fan and mechanical components running under increased thermal and mechanical stress
→ Scaling and biofilm buildup accelerated by warm water temperatures
→ Structural issues that were minor in cooler months and become urgent in peak season

Catching these issues now is the difference between a planned repair and an emergency call.

Our team is scheduling summer inspections and preventive maintenance visits now. Reach out to get on the calendar: coolingtowersllc.com/services/cooling-tower-inspections | Call: (281) 484-2665
