What defines beauty? Is it what we can control, or is it what happens when we allow freedom to take place?

When Jeff designs a landscape, he isn’t chasing a perfectly manicured, overly trimmed look. He’s pursuing something more natural. More authentic. A landscape that feels like a mountain trail you’ve stumbled upon and can’t wait to keep exploring.

There’s something beautiful about allowing plants to grow the way they were designed to grow. To move with the wind. To spread naturally. To create a landscape that feels alive rather than manufactured.

For so long, we’ve been taught that beauty is found in control. In neat rows, perfect edges, and constant maintenance.

But what if beauty looks more like trust?

What if the most beautiful landscapes are the ones where we step back, let go, and allow nature to reclaim its place?

At Mott Restoration, that’s the vision. Not to force the land into our idea of perfection, but to create spaces where nature can once again define what beautiful looks like. 🌱✨

As Jeff walks through a recently completed landscape he designed, he takes us deeper into the story behind some of California’s most beloved native plants. 🌿

He begins with the California poppy, one of the most iconic plants in the state. As California’s official state flower, it has captured the hearts of generations. These brilliant blooms spread naturally by seed across hillsides and mountains, creating the breathtaking displays that have become synonymous with California itself.

Jeff shares how beloved these flowers are, so much so that when they’ve been removed from certain areas, there have been passionate efforts to bring them back.

He also highlights the Desert Mallow, another incredible native plant that helps extend color in the garden well into the summer months. While many plants begin to fade, Desert Mallow continues bringing vibrant beauty to the landscape.

This is one of the things Jeff loves most about native landscaping. Every plant has a story. Every plant serves a purpose. And together they create landscapes that are beautiful, resilient, and deeply connected to California’s natural heritage. 🌱✨

This is the beauty of going native. Nothing about it feels forced. These plants were designed for this place long before we arrived. And when we plant them again, it’s like California begins breathing a little deeper.

Project by project, Jeff is helping restore that connection. One native landscape at a time. 🌱

Take a stroll with Jeff through one of the landscape projects he’s working on. 🌿✨

As we walk through the garden, Jeff shares the beauty and story behind the plants that fill the space. He reaches down and grabs a coffeeberry in his hands, a plant whose berries begin bright red before transforming into a deep, rich purple over time.

Further along the path, he points out the ground cover sages spreading across the landscape, along with the sagebrush bringing texture and movement to the garden.

Then you notice the woolly blue curls scattered throughout the land, adding that unmistakable wild California beauty.

This is what makes native landscapes so special. Every plant has a purpose. Every layer tells a story. And together, they create a space that feels alive. 🌱

In the midst of the fires happening across Los Angeles, it’s hard to ignore the reality unfolding around us in real time.

There is loss, uncertainty, and a deep awareness of how quickly everything can change.

But even here, the land is still speaking.

What is native carries a different kind of strength. It knows how to endure. It knows how to return. And even in moments like this, it reminds us that recovery is not a question of if, but when.

Beneath what we can see, something is already beginning again.” ✨

WILD AND FREE
Part 1

California, like all of us, has longed for freedom. It’s longed to step back into the natural state it was born for.

And this is the story that Jeff stepped into thirty years ago. And it’s a story we all are part of.

When he moved here, he fell in love with California’s beauty. But as he explored the land more deeply, he realized something was missing. The beautiful native plants that once blanketed the state had slowly disappeared from so many places.

And somewhere in that realization, a passion planted itself in Jeff’s heart.

A belief that California once again should be WILD and FREE.

Something is SHIFTING.

The world is longing for authenticity now. We’re learning to stop forcing perfection and start returning to what’s real, what’s alive, what’s native to us.

And maybe that’s why native landscapes resonate so deeply. They remind us that life was never meant to be sterile or controlled. It was meant to breathe, to move, to grow WILD and free.

What’s HEALTHIEST for the ground beneath us may also be what’s healthiest for us.
