Geothermal Leak Detection — Leak Located & Confirmed
A few weeks ago, we shared an upcoming leak detection project involving a large geothermal heating and cooling system at a Pennsylvania school district.
The system consists of 24 geothermal circuits, approximately 240 underground wells, and several miles of buried piping. Three circuits were suspected of leaking, presenting a challenging diagnostic project due to the size of the system and the very small amount of water loss.
After extensive diagnostic testing and surveying, Mainline Leak Detection successfully isolated and located a small underground leak and marked the area for excavation.
A contractor later excavated at the marked location and confirmed the leak at a buried pipe joint.
Small leaks on large geothermal systems can be particularly difficult to locate. Minimal water loss can produce very little detectable sound, while the amount of underground piping makes narrowing down the source even more challenging.
Finding and marking the leak before excavation allowed the repair contractor to target a specific area rather than searching through thousands of feet of buried geothermal piping.
