Building in a Changing Market: Navigating Tariffs & Rising Costs:
Tariffs are creating another layer of uncertainty for the construction industry, putting pressure on material costs, project budgets, and schedules.
Steel, aluminum, and copper have been particularly affected. As of 2026, tariffs on certain imported metal products have reached as high as 50%, contributing to significant increases in material prices. According to the Associated General Contractors of America, prices for aluminum mill shapes were up more than 50% year-over-year in June, while steel mill products increased nearly 17%.
For contractors and owners, the impact goes beyond the price of individual materials. Higher costs can affect bids, subcontractor pricing, equipment, mechanical and electrical systems, and ultimately the overall project budget. Tariff uncertainty can also make it more difficult to accurately forecast costs on projects that may not begin for several months.
At Catcord Construction, careful planning, early procurement, and close communication with owners, architects, and subcontractors are more important than ever. In a changing market, understanding material pricing and identifying potential cost impacts early can help keep projects on budget and moving forward.
In today's construction environment, building smart means planning ahead.
