Structural Insulated Panels (SIPS) are a high-performance building system that consist of an insulating foam core sandwiched between two structural facings. In this modern home, they were used as the support system for the timber frame trusses, providing a sturdy foundation and great building insulation.

The Jane Clifton Ashford Center at Camp Arrowhead features one large room that functions as the camp dining hall. The room can also be divided into three, making space for events. Soaring exposed wood trusses, and stunning stone fireplaces, and courtyard gathering areas where memories are made.

Camp Arrowhead, a co-ed youth camp and retreat center located in Lewes, DE, completed a 10,000 sq. ft. dining hall in 2022. The 167 acre camp sits along the coastal waters and backs up to 400 acres of state park land.

Because of its location, the design had to account for more wind during the engineering process. Connections were reinforced with steel gusset plates, adding a decorative but functional element to the building.

Timber was added to this home construction project after the build was already underway. Hip roofs are over many of the bedrooms and office spaces, requiring intense on-site surveying to fit the timber into place. These detailed measurements were the first step in creating an intricate design that was seamlessly installed.

Curved architecture plays a prominent role in the design of this private residence. A deep brick barrel ceiling crowns the kitchen, adorned with timber beams. The arched theme carries through the other spaces in the home, connected through the rafters and custom fireplace mantels with decorative hammered steel accents.

Rooted in the Balinese design principle of Tri Hata Karana - creating harmony between humanity, nature, and the divine - the architecture of this home sought the use of natural materials, integration of air movement and natural light, and designated space for quiet reflection.

This timber frame home centers around a tall stone fireplace and wraps around a central courtyard. Tapered posts and rafters resonate with the Asian design aesthetic, supported by curved bolster beams, and connected through traditional joinery, including scarf joints with hardwood wedges.

Integral to Asian design is the harmony between humanity and nature. A home is built on a strong foundation, forged with natural materials, surrounded by a guarding wall for privacy and protection. At its heart is a garden space.

The exterior of this timber frame home features deep over-hanging eaves with timber brackets and decorative rafter tails with copper flashing to protect the wood. A Japanese garden anchors the home with gentle flowing water and winding pathways, creating a Zen oasis.

Designing this porch awning on this private residence required careful coordination with the other building crews during the home construction process. Intense on-site surveying was necessary in order to place hangers and connections while the facade was being finished.

The hallmark of this wrap-around porch is the circular corner. Each radial of the curve was cut to a different size in a repeating pattern assembled in the shop, and then reassembled on location during the installation process. To create cohesion, the tails of the radials are all milled to the same size, matching the smallest pieces of the awning.

Uniquely accented with swept, curved eaves, this private pool house creates a shaded sanctuary on hot summer days.

Perched on top of stone pillars, the rafters are notched, and a milled sweep attached, to create the gracefully curved roof line. The Douglas fir timbers and traditional mortise and tenon joinery accentuate the naturally inviting space.
