During the Design Assist process, we help architects and designers incorporate timber design into their projects. When designing the Crispus Attucks Culture and Community Center, which was constructed between two existing structures, we had to consider the construction tolerances of these adjacent structural systems. We designed field adjustability into the connections so that the timber frame could fit into the space accurately. With on-site data and closely coordinated planning, we were able to quickly and efficiently construct the timber frame in-place and on-schedule.

This open garage space is used to showcase a collection of old antiques, including a central elevator lift. The timber frame was designed to be able to hold the weight of that elevator, which employs a manually operated pulley system to go up and down between levels. To add to the antique aesthetic, the timbers and metals were left unfinished and allowed to patina naturally, creating a new functional space with an aged appearance.

Steel and timber work together beautifully to provide structural support in all kinds of applications and aesthetics. To keep the garage space as open as possible, a hybrid steel truss system using steel struts and tension rods hold the roof structure in place. Cross braces were added to create a more rigid structure and a steel beam was employed to support the upstairs storage area. The wood and steel are left bare to age naturally and create a unique patina.

To restore this 1700's stone farmhouse, it needed to be gutted down to its foundation. To preserve the antique heritage of the building, reclaimed timbers were measured and cut by hand to outfit the space, creating a cozy reception area and elegant dining space.

The historic Gristmill and Renfrew Museum and Park is a functional replica that will be used to educate students and visitors on the history of the property, the land, and the country. Because the property sits on the Historic Register, the project needed to be as historically accurate as possible. The timber frame in the grist mill is white oak, a hard sturdy wood, but prone to twisting as it dries. We took extra care with this project to ensure the best outcome with the structure, and today the grist mill is a staple on property/
