A deck is the room that gets you from the back door to everything else, so it is worth building at the size you actually need. The sun is down before dinner by the end of the month, and that used to be the end of the evening. Lighting is what changes it. Strings over the patio for the general glow, task light where the cooking actually happens, and low fixtures on the steps so nobody is guessing at them. Cooking moved outside and it never moved back. Counter space that fits more than one person, storage that lives out there year round, a grill built into the run instead of parked beside it, and a bar where everyone ends up anyway.
