Another Successful Project in the Books!

We recently wrapped up a heavy excavation project for a brand-new construction in Louisburg, Kansas (Miami County)! For this project, we dug and shaped a custom 69’x51’ rectangular septic lagoon.

Why Choose a Septic Lagoon?

For rural properties and new construction builds where standard lateral lines or conventional septic systems aren't the ideal fit, a septic lagoon can be a fantastic, low-maintenance alternative for wastewater management. Utilizing natural sunlight, aerobic bacteria, and evaporation, lagoons are a reliable and cost-effective option for many land owners in eastern Kansas.

A massive thank you to Rossi Septic for trusting us with the excavation services on this build! If you are in need of top-tier septic system installation in Miami County, Kansas, make sure to reach out to Rossi Septic for your upcoming projects.

🌧️ Rain or shine, the work gets done!

We moved some major tonnage today—176 tons of AB3 aggregate—to complete a massive driveway, parking, and storage area for a rural residence.

Spreading AB3 in the rain is definitely no walk in the park, but all that moisture works in our favor! It allowed us to pack the material down tight for an exceptionally smooth, rock-solid finish that’s built to hold up under heavy use.

📍 Spring Hill, Kansas

Just wrapped up a full gravel driveway repair project in Spring Hill, KS, and the finished product looks great.

This 300+ ft gravel driveway had been dealing with years of over-compaction, poor drainage, and areas of washed-out gravel. To restore it properly and ensure long-term performance, we started by scraping and preparing the existing subbase so new material could properly bond and hold.

We then installed a fresh layer of AB3 aggregate / AB3 gravel across the entire driveway, followed by precision grading and crowning to promote proper water runoff and prevent future washouts. Drainage improvements were made uphill near the house by reworking the drainage ditches so water can effectively move off the driveway instead of sitting on it.

If you’re dealing with ruts, washouts, standing water, or a driveway that just isn’t performing like it should, proper grading, drainage, and the right aggregate make all the difference.

Services included:
• Gravel driveway repair
• Driveway grading and crowning
• AB3 gravel installation
• Subbase preparation
• Skid steer work
• Drainage correction and ditch grading
• Gravel parking area installation
• Driveway entrance reshaping

A successful build starts long before the first wall goes up.
Glacial Plains Land Services recently teamed up with Safe Burn Land Services to complete the site preparation for a future prefabricated home.

This project near Baldwin City, Kansas involved excavating a full walk-out basement while carefully shaping the surrounding grade to create a functional and properly draining homesite. In addition to the basement excavation, we also constructed a level building pad for a future pole barn that will connect to the home through a covered walkway/breezeway.

Over the course of two long days, we moved more than 1,800 cubic yards of material while focusing on proper grading, drainage, and preparation for the next stages of construction.
A walk-out basement requires more than simply removing dirt. Proper grading is critical to direct water away from the foundation, reduce moisture issues, and create a finished elevation that works with the natural landscape.

The next phase of this project will include installing stone retaining walls along the walk-out side. These walls will not only provide the necessary support for the elevated grade but will also dramatically improve the finished appearance by creating defined outdoor spaces, cleaner transitions between elevations, and a more polished look around the home.

Projects like this are a great example of the importance of proper site preparation. The work done before construction begins plays a major role in the long-term performance, drainage, and appearance of the finished property.

Thank you to Safe Burn Land Services for bringing us in to partner up on this project.

A driveway’s biggest enemy isn’t always traffic… it’s water.

One of the most important parts of building and maintaining a long-lasting gravel driveway is proper drainage.

This project near Paola, Kansas focused on restoring the drainage along the side of a freshly reconditioned gravel driveway by cutting in a properly shaped drainage swale. The goal was simple: give rainwater a controlled path away from the driveway surface instead of allowing it to run across the gravel, creating washouts, potholes, and erosion. This, in conjunction with a properly crowned driveway, creates a driving surface that is built to last.

The first photo shows the newly constructed driveway ditch before rainfall. The second photo shows the same drainage swale doing exactly what it was designed to do — safely carrying water away during a rain event.

A properly designed driveway drainage system can help:
• Reduce gravel washout
• Prevent standing water and soft areas
• Extend the life of your driveway
• Protect your investment in your gravel surface

At Glacial Plains Land Services, we don’t just add gravel — we focus on the grading, drainage, and foundation work that helps gravel driveways perform for years to come.

If your gravel driveway struggles with water issues, erosion, or repeated washouts, we’d be happy to take a look and discuss solutions.

Looking for a budget-friendly alternative to expensive hardscapes and paver patios?

A decorative gravel patio or sitting area can be a great way to create a beautiful outdoor living space without the high cost of traditional materials.

For this project, Glacial Plains Land Services travelled to Ottawa, Kansas and transformed an unused area beside a swimming pool into a functional gravel sitting area connected to the customer’s wooden deck. We excavated the area, built a proper foundation, and installed a drainage system beneath the gravel surface to help manage water and prevent pooling during heavy rains.

After installing perforated HDPE drainage pipe, aggregate, and a discharge system to move water away from the area, we finished the space with decorative gravel and compacted it into a firm, low-maintenance surface.

The result is an attractive, functional outdoor space that improves the look of the property while staying practical and budget-friendly.

At Glacial Plains Land Services, we specialize in:✅ Decorative gravel patios and sitting areas✅ Gravel driveway installation and repair✅ Drainage solutions and water management✅ Site preparation and grading✅ Outdoor living space improvements

A properly built gravel area is more than just spreading rock — the foundation, drainage, and installation process are what make it last.

Another gravel driveway improvement project completed by Glacial Plains Land Services!

This customer reached out after struggling with wet, muddy conditions and limited access to his detached barn. The existing area was not providing the stable surface needed for everyday use, especially when moving trailers and equipment in and out of the barn.

To solve the problem, we excavated and prepared the area in front of the barn to create a properly constructed gravel base. We installed a foundation layer of 3-inch minus base rock, providing a strong, compactable surface designed to reduce future settling, rutting, and sinkage. After establishing the proper base, we capped the area with AB3 crushed aggregate and blended the new gravel seamlessly into the existing driveway system.

During construction, we focused on both functionality and long-term durability by creating a wider approach with the proper entry angle. This allows easier access for trailers, equipment, and vehicles while reducing the risk of edge breakdown and gravel displacement.

In addition to the barn access improvements, we also expanded and widened the parking area near the home. This newly constructed gravel parking area connects directly to the customer’s recently built deck, creating additional parking space while providing a clean, stable, and dry walking path from the driveway to the outdoor living area.

At Glacial Plains Land Services, we specialize in gravel driveway installation, gravel driveway repair, driveway extensions, drainage improvements, and site preparation throughout the area. A properly built gravel surface starts with proper excavation, quality aggregate, and the right construction methods to ensure it performs for years to come.

Another gravel driveway repair and site prep / grading project completed in Paola, Kansas—this one served a dual purpose!

The existing gravel driveway was in rough shape, with deep ruts from years of traffic. These ruts were trapping rainwater, leading to washouts, material loss, and soft spots throughout the drive.

To fix the issue, we started by power raking the existing gravel driveway, breaking up compacted areas and redistributing material to create a solid sub-base. From there, we performed precise grading, establishing a proper crown in the driveway so water sheds off to the sides instead of sitting on the surface.

We then added 3” of fresh AB3 gravel, creating a smooth, durable driving surface built to last. Now, water properly drains into the existing swales, eliminating washouts and preventing future soft spots.

While on site, we also addressed a major drainage concern around the home. The soil around the foundation was sloped toward the house, allowing water to collect against the concrete walls—something that can lead to foundation pressure, cracking, and long-term structural issues.

We delivered and installed 25 yards of soil, then completed proper grading and site prep around the foundation to ensure water now drains away from the home—protecting the structure and improving overall drainage.

If you’re dealing with gravel driveway issues, drainage problems, or need grading and site prep in Paola, Kansas or surrounding areas, we’re here to help.

Another successful gravel driveway install & gravel driveway repair in the books!

This project was completed in Olathe, Kansas near Gardner, Kansas, where the existing entrance lacked proper drainage—leading to washouts and ongoing maintenance issues. We corrected the problem by installing drainage swales on both sides of the driveway to direct water flow away from the driving surface and into the roadside ditches. We also repaired the washed-out areas around the culvert pipe and properly crowned the driveway to ensure water sheds off instead of sitting or running down the center.

In addition to the gravel driveway repair, we completed a 150-foot gravel driveway extension into the property to support a future build site.

For the new section, we started with proper site prep and grading, removing topsoil to expose a solid, undisturbed base. We then installed geotextile fabric to prevent the dirt and gravel from mixing—helping extend the life of the driveway. From there, we built a strong sub-base using 3” minus base rock and finished it off with a smooth, durable layer of AB3 gravel.

This gravel driveway is now built the right way from the ground up and ready for the next phase of development.

If you’re dealing with drainage issues, washouts, or looking for a new gravel driveway install in Olathe, Gardner, or surrounding Kansas areas, we’ve got you covered.

Another successful gravel driveway restoration completed in Princeton, KS (Franklin County)!

For this project, we used a power rake to fully recondition the driveway surface. A power rake is one of many tools for gravel driveway repair—it breaks up compacted material, removes ruts and washboarding, redistributes existing aggregate, and brings buried rock back to the surface. This process helps restore proper drainage, improves traction, and creates a solid foundation to work from.

After power raking, we regraded the entire driveway to establish a smooth, even surface with proper crown for water runoff. We then compacted the gravel to lock everything in place, leaving the customer with a clean, durable, and long-lasting driving surface.

If your driveway is suffering from potholes, washouts, or years of compaction, this is an effective way to bring it back to life.
