Bugs!!! Good or bad?

The insects you kill during late-winter cleanup are the same ones that protect your garden all summer. Most of them are hibernating inches from where you work.

WHAT YOU'RE REMOVING

→ Ladybug clusters in window frames — each adult eats up to 5,000 aphids by June. Vacuuming them out removes entire colonies.

→ Lacewing cocoons in garage corners — tucked into cobwebs and crevices since October. Their larvae are among the most effective aphid predators that exist.

→ Ground beetle larvae just below the grass line — pulled up by power-raking thatch in early spring.

→ Rove beetles under rock piles — they eat slug eggs by the hundreds every night. Clearing the rocks scatters them.

→ Hoverfly pupae on shed walls — cemented in tiny mud cases near the ceiling. Hosing down the walls washes them away.

→ Soldier beetle larvae in old potting soil — already hunting garden pests underground. Dumping the soil buries or exposes them.

WHAT TO DO INSTEAD

→ Delay the deep clean until mid-April — by then most hibernating insects have emerged on their own
→ Leave leaf litter under hedges and along fence lines until spring is fully underway
→ Check window frames and garage corners before vacuuming — ladybug clusters and lacewing cocoons are easy to spot and easy to leave alone
→ Move rock piles carefully rather than clearing them entirely — or leave them in place as permanent habitat
→ Old potting soil is still alive — spread it in the garden rather than bagging it

You spent all summer fighting aphids and slugs. Their predators were already on payroll. The difference between a pest-free garden and a problem garden is often just waiting a few weeks before cleaning up.
