🌊 BEACH LOVERS, WE HAVE A TREAT FOR YOU 🌊

Our next project is taking us to Mexico Beach, Florida, where GCUC is rebuilding the East and West Jetties for the City of Mexico Beach.

These aerials were taken before our crews arrived, just days after Hurricane Isaias moved through the Panhandle. The canal is noticeably narrower now from the amount of sand the storm pushed into it, and the tea-colored water is the rain and surge Isaias left behind. 🌀

This is exactly what a jetty is built to stand up to. The project includes demolition of the deteriorated sections, more than 10,000 tons of new armor and core stone, sheet-pile installation, marine mattresses and erosion protection, and a restored concrete walkway on the West Jetty. 🪨

Consider this the "before." Follow along as we post progress from Mexico Beach throughout the project. 📍

There’s a lot more to dirt than what you can simply see with your eyes!

Soil type, moisture, how weight is distributed. It all plays a part in what the ground can support and how we work on it. There’s a reason trenching and excavation have their own safety requirements.

It’s hard to explain the rabbit hole
that comes with truly knowing dirt work but, seeing over 100,000 pounds of machinery sitting on a narrow strip of ground puts it into perspective. The longer you work with dirt, the more you realize how much there is to understand!

Have you seen our projects in person or on social media and thought, "Those are the jobs I'd love to lead"?

GCUC is hiring a Construction Superintendent to join our Panama City team! In this role, you'll run the job site day to day, from daily production and safety to scheduling crews and equipment, on projects across Bay County and the surrounding Panhandle.

We're looking for someone who:
✔️ Has 2+ years as a foreman or superintendent
✔️ Knows underground utility installation and site work
✔️ Can read plans and deliver work that meets the spec
✔️ Communicates clearly with crews, project managers, and inspectors
✔️ Holds OSHA 30 and Advanced MOT certifications

We also have openings on our crews:
📍 PANAMA CITY: Heavy Equipment Operators, Pipelayers, Dump Truck Drivers, Laborers
📍 MILTON / PENSACOLA: Heavy Equipment Operators, Pipelayers, Laborers

If you’ve heard “I’m bored” more times than you can count lately, we’ve got a small assignment for the kids. 😂

We turned this photo of our equipment into a coloring page to keep a few little hands busy!

Open the coloring page, tap “Save Photo,” and print it on any printer using “Fit to Page.” Crayons are the only equipment they’ll need. 🖍️

Public Safety Tip —> retention ponds are not nature's free swimming pools!

We know, we know... the fishing is good after a heavy rain, and that water looks mighty inviting. 🎣

BUT we build these for a living, and there is a lot more to a retention pond than what you can see from the bank:

🛑 They are deeper than they look.
🛑 The banks are steep and slick, especially after a rain.
🛑 That water is stormwater runoff, and it is never considered "safe swimming water."

Oh, and this is Florida... so you may not be the only one in there. 🐊

Keep the kids, the dogs & your favorite fishing pole on the dry side, and let the pond do its job!

A closer look at our work on TMH Phase II in Panama City Beach…

The Phase II portion of the hospital sits catty-corner from the Phase I medical office building. These photos show how the two phases fit together and the progress since our early groundwork on Phase II.

On a campus this size, site preparation is a world of its own. Grading, building pads, underground utilities, and drainage take skilled crews and careful coordination. Our work continues around the hospital as construction moves forward, and these aerial views show just how much ground our crews have covered!

A project this size can seem like it takes forever, but seeing the full site puts the pace of our crews’ work into perspective. There’s a lot to get done across that much ground, and they keep it moving every day!

“I was on that jobsite” means something when it’s bringing better healthcare to the Panhandle.

Our crews completed the site work and infrastructure for Phase I of the FSU Health and TMH campus, now open and caring for patients in Panama City Beach.

This aerial captures the early groundwork for Phase II, the new hospital, a joint effort by TMH, Florida State University, and The St. Joe Company!

This weeks Safety Tip —>

Never assume the operator knows you’re there, no matter how long you’ve worked together.

Give equipment room to work, stay clear of travel paths, and get the operator’s acknowledgment before approaching. If you’re backing with a spotter and lose sight of them, stop immediately. Never guess where they went.

Keep your head up and look out for each other. At the end of the day, the goal is for the whole crew to make it home safely!
