Long before the SSG Michael H. Ollis began moving millions of commuters a year through New York Harbor, she was forged on the Gulf Coast by our Eastern Shipbuilding team.
Our shipbuilders poured absolute dedication into this vessel because Hull 219 carries a hero's soul. The ship is named for U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Michael H. Ollis, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor after bravely shielding a fellow soldier on the battlefield. It is only fitting that the vessel bearing his name was built with specialized emergency response features to act as a permanent guardian for the city.
As we look back on 50 years of excellence, we remain proud of the deep meaning behind the steel we shape.
