💧🪲 Bug of the Week: The Giant Water Bug (Toe Biter)!
Have you ever spotted one of these in your yard and wondered what it was?
This is a Giant Water Bug, one of Florida’s largest true bugs. While they spend most of their lives in ponds, lakes, and other freshwater areas, they’re attracted to lights and occasionally end up in yards or around homes.
⚠️ A few interesting facts:
• They can grow over 2 inches long!
• They’re excellent swimmers and fierce predators, feeding on insects, tadpoles, and even small fish.
• They can fly, especially at night.
• They aren’t aggressive toward people, but if handled, they can deliver an extremely painful bite, earning them the nickname “toe biter.”
If you find one around your home, it’s usually just passing through. The best prevention is reducing outdoor lighting during peak activity and keeping doors and windows well sealed.
