Today’s lesson of the day. A 30 year or lifetime shingle becomes a ZERO year shingle when the roofer doesn’t file the warranty with the manufacturer. Met someone yesterday with a 7 year old roof that can’t sell their house because the roof has defects and their roofer didn’t file the standard warranty. Not all manufacturers require you to file for the warranty but Owens Corning does.

Why do some roofs have visible lines? It’s called telegraphing.

After heavy rain in Palm Bay, this new construction home’s exposed roof decking absorbed moisture before the underlayment was installed. As plywood or OSB decking gets wet, it can expand. Where the panels meet over the roof trusses, that expansion presses the decking against each other and then up and can show through the finished roofing material.

H-clips help provide spacing and support between some roof sheathing panels, but they are not installed where the decking meets directly over a truss. That’s why telegraphing often follows the truss pattern beneath the roof. Check the comments for how telegraphing can look.

Proper material storage, panel spacing and timely underlayment installation can help reduce the risk. Although telegraphing is ugly, it is usually only cosmetic and not functional.
