“I do feel A LOT more comfortable that you went and looked more closely at everything.” 🏡🔍

What started as a water stain on a dining room ceiling turned into a much bigger story for these Hawthorn Woods homeowners.

From the street, the house looked good. But a closer inspection revealed an overflowing gutter, separated flashing, aging cedar siding, deteriorated seams and other weaknesses that were allowing water to find its way into the home.

Rather than continue repairing one problem at a time, the homeowners chose to address the exterior as a complete system. 🛠️

The transformation included:
🏠 LP SmartSide siding
🪟 New windows and exterior trim
💧 6″ gutters and downspouts
🔨 New soffit and fascia
🌬️ Attic air-sealing and ventilation improvements
🚪 A new Indigo Therma-Tru front entry door

The finished home still feels like their home—just better protected, better detailed and ready for the years ahead. And most importantly? The water intrusion has stopped. ✅

Seeing a water stain, cracked siding, failing caulk or overflowing gutters? Sometimes the visible problem is only the first clue.

Can you guess what caused this damage? 🤔

We were called in about this unusual exterior damage on a home in Lake Zurich, IL—and the culprit might not be what you expect. 👀🏠

🌤️ When was the last time you took a walk around your home and really looked at the exterior?

Nice weather is the perfect time to do a quick inspection. Take a lap around the house and look for cracked, loose, damaged, or deteriorating siding, along with anything that could be directing water where it shouldn’t go. 👀🏠

At this Inverness, IL home, we were called in when an ill-connected sump pump pipe caused the wearing away of the homeowner's James Hardie siding —the kind of issue that can easily go unnoticed until it starts causing bigger problems. 💧

A few minutes outside now could help you catch something early.

✅ Check your siding
✅ Look around pipes and penetrations
✅ Watch for signs of moisture or staining
✅ Make sure drainage is directing water away from the house

Where does rainwater go if it gets behind your siding? 💧

If the system is installed correctly, it drains down behind the siding and is directed back outside before it can reach the structure of your home.

House wrap and flashing create a drainage plane, while properly installed channels and weep holes give water a path to escape.

If that path is blocked—or the system is installed incorrectly—moisture can become trapped, leading to rotted sheathing, mold, damaged framing, and even interior leaks.

At Holda Construction, we pay close attention to these hidden details because proper water management is a critical part of doing a siding job right.

The goal is simple: if water gets in, give it a safe way back out.

🔥 Did you know something as simple as sunlight reflecting off a swimming pool float can create enough concentrated heat to damage—and even ignite—vinyl siding?

When we answered the call of this Gurnee homeowner, this is exactly what he was facing. Reflected sunlight from balls floating in the swimming pool focused on the back wall of the garage, causing the siding to overheat and catch fire.

After the damage, the homeowner chose to go beyond repairing just the burned section. We replaced the siding on the entire house, giving the exterior a consistent, updated look while restoring the damaged area properly. 🏠🔨

What should be inspected BEFORE new siding goes on your home? 🏠

Once the old siding is removed, we look at what’s underneath:
→ Sheathing — Is it solid, dry, and free of rot or deterioration?
→ House wrap / weather barrier — Is it properly installed and protecting the wall?
→ Windows and doors — Are the openings properly flashed to direct water outside?
→ Wall condition — Is the surface straight and ready for the new siding?
→ Water-damaged areas — Are there signs of past leaks or moisture problems that need to be addressed first?

At Holda Construction, we believe these details should be handled before they’re covered up by brand-new siding.

Because a great siding installation isn’t just about how your home looks when we’re finished.

It’s about knowing what’s behind it was done right, too.

What keeps water from sneaking into your walls around windows, doors, and rooflines? 💧
A big part of the answer is flashing.

Flashing is installed at vulnerable areas—around windows and doors, roof-to-wall transitions, and other places where siding is interrupted.

Its job is simple: catch water and direct it back outside before it gets into the wall.

And here’s the problem: once the siding is installed, you usually can’t see it. Missing or improperly installed flashing can lead to leaks, rotted sheathing, and expensive repairs—even when the siding looks perfectly fine.

At Holda Construction, we understand how important these hidden details are. That’s why proper flashing and water management aren’t shortcuts we take—they’re part of doing the job right.

Because the details you don’t see are often the ones protecting your home the most.

Did you know your siding is NOT actually your home’s waterproofing system? 🏠💧

Siding is the first line of defense—but some water can still get behind it.

That’s why what’s behind your siding matters so much:

→ House wrap
→ Proper flashing
→ Drip caps
→ Drainage paths

These hidden components work together to direct water down and back outside before it reaches the structure of your home.

If they’re installed incorrectly, you can end up with rot, mold, or interior leaks, even when the siding looks perfectly fine.

Good siding isn’t just about what you see. It’s about what’s happening behind it.

🏠 What happens when your contractor finds MORE damage than you agreed to repair?

After wind tore fascia from the peak of Dennis's two-story Grayslake home, we gave him two options:
🔨 $500 — repair the damaged section
🏡 $850 — replace all four pieces for a more uniform look

Since Dennis was considering new siding in the future, he chose the practical $500 repair.

Once our foreman got up to the gable, he discovered additional damage on the opposite side, including loose fascia and signs of water getting in.

We were already there with the equipment and access, so we repaired both sides. Dennis still paid $500. For us, being fair and honest also means honoring the price we agreed to whenever we reasonably can: not turning every unexpected discovery into an opportunity to charge more. 👍

Not every unexpected issue can be fixed at no additional cost. But homeowners should always know what was discovered, why it matters, and what it will cost before the work changes.

Sometimes the right choice is the bigger project. Sometimes it's the smaller repair. Our job is to help you understand the difference.
