Discovered a native caterpillar - it can spray acid! Feeds on oaks… strips the leaves clean.

I met with a new client yesterday who was afraid he had Oak Wilt disease on some trees on his property. When we looked at the shingle oak trees that were struggling, we saw that all of the leaves were skeletonized, covered in webbing and frass and logically suspected some sort of insect feeding on the leaves. Then when looking at the second tree, we discovered a small green caterpillar feeding directly on the leaves. It was the variable oakleaf caterpillar, and he was going to town on a smaller, younger tree! Caught in the act!!!

Beautiful little oak trooping on in a parking lot…. It has a ticking time-bomb on board though. 😳

I'll keep it simple, Western Kentucky! If you see this - know that this is inherently bad for trees. AND if someone tells you this is OK, then RUN!
