🔍 Then & Now: Before Circuit Breakers, There Were Fuses
Before circuit breakers became common in homes, fuse panels were the standard way to protect a home's electrical system.
Those round, screw-in fuses had the same basic job that circuit breakers have today—they protected the wiring inside your walls from carrying more current than it was designed to handle.
The difference is how they work.
A circuit breaker trips and can usually be reset once the problem is corrected.
A fuse contains a small metal strip that melts when too much current flows through it. Once it "blows," it has to be replaced before power can be restored.
So why did we move away from fuses?
Circuit breakers are generally more convenient because they can be reset instead of replaced, and they offer additional protective technologies that weren't available with traditional fuse panels, such as GFCI and AFCI protection. They also make troubleshooting much easier and are better suited for the electrical demands of today's homes.
The photos below show one of the fuse panels we've replaced with a modern breaker panel. While many fuse panels can still be safe when they're in good condition and used properly, homeowners often choose to upgrade for added convenience, improved functionality, and to better support modern electrical needs. Another consideration is insurance. Some insurance companies have restrictions on older fuse panels or may require additional documentation before providing coverage, so upgrading can sometimes simplify the insurance process as well.
