Planted 1 year ago almost to the day, this yard was a blank slate (w**dy turfgrass) and it’s now bursting with life and color. I did an experiment and sowed annuals for a green mulch instead of using wood chips. It has been a stressful experiment with the w**d seeds in the soil, but the perennials we planted as plugs have proven to be tenacious and stronger than the w**ds. There were some losses, but some of those could have happened anyway, there was a bit of a drought last fall after all. Next time I’m going to experiment on space less than 1000 SF! 😬

Serviceberry season is here! Robins, cardinals, squirrels, my children, and I hope a flock of cedar waxwings are inconstant rotation gobbling up the berries. They are delicious and not something you’ll ever find at the store. Grow your own and enjoy the blooms, bounty, and fall color. It’s a perfect tree for a small yard or near the power lines (it’s not tall).

I love finding evidence of leaf cutter bees in my garden. They make semicircle cutouts from leaves to build their nests. They usually use redbud leaves which I have many of in my yard, but this year herbicide drift from surrounding yard treatments has caused my redbud leaves to curl (2nd pic). Red buds are very sensitive to herbicides and this is one way it reacts to contaminated air. Their leaves should be smooth and would normally have semicircle cutouts from the leaf cutter bees visiting. I’m glad there’s another species for them to build their nests from in my yard. Planted by a squirrel, I will let this oak tree continue to grow for now before w**ding it out of the garden this fall (it’s very close to the driveway).

🌷Species tulips were something I learned about at the Louisville Botanic Gardens a few years ago, this introduction has been magical! I’ve been trying multiple varieties each year my two favorites so far are T. batalanii ‘Bright Gem’ which are buttery yellow and T. dasystemon which look like stars and grow low to the ground. 💛

🌼In other news, my favorite ground cover is blooming! Robin’s plantain (Erigeron pulchellus ‘Lynnhaven Carpet’). 🤍
