This morning’s garden observations. Some cute little bees (I’m bad a bee ID) on my sweet coneflower. And it turns out my some of my Joe pye w**d flowers have aphids (the green specs). The ants are acting as bodyguards to protect them from predators, so they can collect the honeydew (aphid waste). I love all the little things happening in a garden.

I met a new friend in Dayton’s Bergamo Center prairie last night, the Grape Leaffolder moth. Guess what plant it eats as a caterpillar. And yes there was a lot of grapevine in and around the prairie.

Asters, goldenrods, and milkw**d oh my! Reach out if you need some plants to fill some gaps in a garden, to add some keystone species that pollinators adore, or if you just need more plants in your life. My planting season is over and I have extra plants I’d love to get in the ground while the weather is still favorable.

Planted 1 year ago almost to the day, this yard was a blank slate (w**dy turfgrass) and it’s now bursting with life and color. I did an experiment and sowed annuals for a green mulch instead of using wood chips. It has been a stressful experiment with the w**d seeds in the soil, but the perennials we planted as plugs have proven to be tenacious and stronger than the w**ds. There were some losses, but some of those could have happened anyway, there was a bit of a drought last fall after all. Next time I’m going to experiment on space less than 1000 SF! 😬
