From the archives / The Muntzel-Keach Building

Designed by ESC founders Elwin S. Elswood, Roland A. Carlson, and Dean R. Smith, the Muntzel-Keach Building showcases the clean lines, flat roof, and strong horizontal forms that define mid-century modern architecture.

Fun Fact: This building wasn't just one of our early designs—it was also home to the ESC team for a short time in the 1950s!

A look back at the architecture that helped shape our story.

It was such an honor having this home on the KC Artisan Homes Tour this year, and this modern Mediterranean dream has SO many good details.

A couple of our favorites:
The pocketing exterior door — the whole thing literally disappears and suddenly… you’re outside.
✨ That barrel-vault ceiling in the kitchen. We might be biased, but… chef’s kiss. 👌🏼

We loved getting to bring this one to life and sharing it with everyone who came through!

This month, we’re proud to celebrate Gerald Janssen’s 46th anniversary with ESC!

Gerald joined ESC in 1980, and has since become an integral part of our firm’s story. As a principal, his commitment to design excellence, thoughtful attention to detail, and appreciation for craftsmanship—beautifully reflected in his hand-drawn sketches—have helped shape ESC into the award-winning architecture firm it is today.

Congratulations, Gerald, and thank you for 46 years of dedication, leadership, and invaluable contributions to ESC!

We are fortunate to be involved in the design of so many homes, but we love creating and collaborating on outdoor living spaces as well. Whether it's a cozy fire pit, deck, pool, porch or pergola, it's *nearly* time to sit back and enjoy those cooler summer evenings.
