Late-summer color in the garden

Hydrangea paniculata ‘Little Lime’ pairs beautifully with Phlox paniculata ‘Blue Paradise,’ which can shift from pink and fuchsia tones to a striking blue-violet as temperatures cool.

A beautiful combination that keeps changing as the season moves toward fall.

Three perennials that keep the garden blooming through summer:

• Coreopsis verticillata ‘Moonbeam’ — soft, creamy-yellow flowers over fine, airy foliage. Blooms from June into August and can rebloom after shearing.
• Allium ‘Millenium’ — rosy-purple globe-shaped flowers that bloom in midsummer, typically July into August. It was named the 2018 Perennial Plant of the Year.
• Perovskia atriplicifolia ‘Little Spire’ — a compact Russian sage with aromatic gray-green foliage and violet-blue flowers from summer into frost.

Three reliable choices for adding long-lasting color, texture, and interest to a sunny summer garden.

Colchicum ‘The Giant’ puts on one of the most unexpected displays of the fall garden.

Often called autumn crocus, meadow saffron, or “naked ladies,” Colchicum isn’t a true crocus—and what looks like a bulb is actually a corm. (RHS)

Its life cycle is part of what makes it so interesting. Broad foliage emerges in spring, gathering energy and storing it in the underground corm. By late summer, the leaves have completely died back. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, large lavender-purple flowers emerge in fall with no foliage at all—hence the nickname “naked ladies.” (RHS)

And despite the common name “meadow saffron,” Colchicum is not the edible saffron crocus (Crocus sativus). (RHS)

The Evolution of Our Cottage Garden — Part 5

A late-summer garden full of color, texture, and plenty of pollinator activity.

Featured in the garden:
• Amsonia ‘Blue Ice’ — a compact bluestar with deep lavender-blue spring flowers and attractive yellow fall color.
• Clethra alnifolia ‘Ruby Spice’ — fragrant rose-pink flowers bring color to the garden in late summer and attract bees and butterflies.
• Cornus sanguinea ‘Midwinter Fire’ — grown for its brilliantly colored stems that provide standout winter interest.
• Hydrangea paniculata ‘Limelight’ — large flower clusters transition from green to creamy white before taking on pink and burgundy tones later in the season.
• Convallaria majalis ‘Rosea’ — the pink-flowered form of lily-of-the-valley, with soft pink, bell-shaped spring blooms.
• Vernonia noveboracensis — New York ironweed, a tall native perennial with rich purple flowers.
• Phlox paniculata ‘Jeana’ — a pink-flowering garden phlox known for its long bloom season and strong pollinator appeal.

A great example of how combining woody plants and perennials can create interest from spring through winter.

Hydrangea paniculata ‘Bobo’ may be compact, but it puts on an incredible show. Dense, cone-shaped white blooms cover the plant in summer, gradually taking on soft pink tones as they age.

A great choice when you want the look and performance of a panicle hydrangea in a smaller space, ‘Bobo’ typically stays around 2–3 feet tall with a slightly wider spread.

Two standout plants in Jerry’s garden: Edgeworthia chrysantha and Magnolia grandiflora ‘Bracken’s Brown Beauty’.

Edgeworthia brings incredible winter interest with clusters of fragrant yellow flowers appearing before the foliage, while ‘Bracken’s Brown Beauty’ Southern magnolia provides year-round structure with glossy evergreen leaves, rich brown undersides, and large, fragrant white flowers in summer. (Plant Toolbox)

Two beautiful plants that earn their place in the garden through more than one season.
