About 25 years ago, Jerry spotted an old, rusted mason’s mixing tub on the side of the road and said, “Stop the car!”

He brought it home, planted it, and it remains a feature in the garden today. With minimal watering and maintenance, this unexpected find has become a lasting part of the landscape.

Sometimes the most interesting garden features come from the most unlikely places. Don’t overlook the potential of repurposing unique objects in your landscape.

A beautiful fall day for planting violas!

Today we planted Viola Sorbet ‘Orchid Rose Beacon,’ a cold-tolerant variety that brings delicate shades of pink, lavender, and rose to the garden. Violas thrive in cooler temperatures, making them a wonderful choice for adding color to autumn containers and garden beds.

Chrysanthemum ‘Sheffield Pink’ brings a soft, warm glow to the autumn garden with its masses of peachy-pink, daisy-like flowers.

Blooming late in the season, this hardy perennial provides valuable color when many other plants have finished flowering. Its abundant blooms also offer a late-season nectar source for pollinators.

Aesculus parviflora (Bottlebrush Buckeye) brings beautiful seasonal interest to the woodland garden. Known for its long, white bottlebrush-like flowers in summer, this large, spreading shrub puts on another display in autumn as its lush green foliage turns a rich, buttery yellow.

Thriving in partial shade, Bottlebrush Buckeye is an excellent choice for naturalistic plantings, woodland edges, and mass plantings.

About 10 years ago, Jerry spent a weekend rummaging through the greenhouse and came across a collection of broken terracotta pots. Typically used for drainage at the bottom of containers, these discarded pieces sparked a different idea.

Rather than letting them go to waste, Jerry laid them out to create a unique garden walkway. A decade later, the path remains, adding texture, character, and a subtle crunch beneath your feet with every step.

Sometimes the most interesting garden features come from simply reimagining what you already have.

Aster tataricus bringing late-season color to the garden with masses of lavender-blue flowers held above tall, textural foliage.

Hardy in USDA Zones 3–9, this vigorous perennial is native to Asia but is not considered invasive in Pennsylvania. Its late bloom also provides a valuable food source for pollinators when many other perennials are finishing for the season.
