Some pictures from a recent project. I’m not a professional conduit installer, but I feel like this turned out pretty well. We could have done it in MC cable, but that doesn’t look nearly as tidy. It sags and droops, and doesn’t provide as much protection to the wires. Overall it was very challenging, and a lot of fun.

Edit: I added a couple of pictures. I took some of the advice given and made some changes. I fixed the box offsets and the panel offsets. Overall it looks a lot better to me.

We started a new construction project in Odessa this week. Metal siding presents some challenges with supporting boxes for exterior plugs and lights. We use this simple trick to make sure the lights and plugs are sturdy. We’ll finish it off with some caulking to prevent any moisture from getting inside.

Did you know there are specific rules for how many wires you can safely put in an electrical box? Each box has an allowable volume that must not be exceeded. Every wire and device that goes inside that box needs to be counted, and if it exceeds the allowable volume for that box you either need to use a bigger box, or reduce the number of wires. If not, it can lead to damaged or overheating wires.

Here’s one for my fellow electricians. This is called the Hot Bend. Unlike heat blankets which have to be plugged into power, it uses a propane tank. It can heat up PVC sizes 1/2” through 6”! I’ve used it for several months now and I love it. Factory elbows are great, but sometimes you just need to be able to heat up and bend some PVC conduit.

This is a thermal image from a house panel I looked at this week. Your electrical panel will generate heat, but quality materials that are properly installed can handle this heat for decades. If a switch, outlet, or even the breakers in your main panel feel hot to the touch that can be a sign something is wrong. We can use a thermal camera to locate potential hot spots that may be hidden behind walls and address them before they cause more serious problems.
