Here's something our crews always build in on Michigan roofs: an ice barrier membrane installed at the eaves, extending at least 24 inches past the exterior wall line - more on steeper roofs. It's required by code in areas with a history of ice damming, and it's the difference between meltwater running off harmlessly and meltwater finding its way under the shingles.
It's one of those details you'll never see once the roof is finished, but it's doing real work every winter.
