WE BOUGHT LAND!!! 🥹🤍🍁

Today is a pretty big day over here at Alma Homes…we officially closed on the property where we’re going to build our new office!

We’ve spent years designing and building dream homes for other families, and now we get to do something we’ve dreamed of for our own company basically since the day we signed our first lease. Alma Homes headquarters is about to be coming in hot, and you better believe we’re taking you along for the entire process.

To say it’s been a tumultuous journey to get here would be an understatement, but we ended up right where we always wanted & were meant to be 🤍 (can’t wait to be neighbors Navarre Dental - and if you saw us attempting to take these photos on your cameras…no you didn’t.) 😂

From the first sketches to the final selections (and probably a few changes of our minds along the way 😂), we’re going to share it all. I can’t wait to show you what we have planned…So tell me, what part of the process are you most looking forward to?

5 things I personally would NOT do in my own home as a designer:

1. No all-white everything homes (you can still have a neutral palette without using all white)

2. A microwave above a range (I like to put them in pantries or hidden in islands)

3. A massive shower (they get cold!)

4. No short toilets over here (comfort height all day everyday) #

5. Never put the shower or tub/shower head on the toilet wall (install these opposite from toilet so you can easily reach the valves to turn off/on)

When it comes to mudrooms, hardwood is a hard no for us. Being such a highly trafficked area with dirty and wet shoes, it’s critical a floor is used that is not only durable but water resistant. We’re team tile most of the time, but we’ve got all the deets if you’re curious on what other flooring options we use in mudrooms. When it comes to laundry rooms, we don’t mess around. Aside from kitchens, laundry rooms are one of the hardest working spaces, so we pack a ton of function into relatively small spaces. What’s a must on our list? Plenty of space to air dry clothes, a sink for pretreating tough stains, elevated washer & dryers (your back will thank us), and please please please give yourself at MINIMUM 4’ in front of your washer & dryer.

Does the thought of picking out your exterior paint color overwhelm you? If so, we’ve got your back! Today we’re sharing some of our favorite gray & white combos.

One thing we do tell all of our clients though is this can be a great place to look for inspiration, but always refer to the actual sample because there are a million factors that can affect how colors show up on our screens.

For this home we went with Agreeable Gray on the shakes & Pure White for the trim and accents.

We went a little cooler here with Repose Gray on the shakes & Simply White for the trim and accents.

Anew Gray has always been a favorite because it’s technically gray but it leans a lot warmer. Here we paired it with White Dove.

If you don’t want to go with a custom color, LP & Hardie both have standard colors you can choose from. Here we went with LP Quarry Gray & Snowscape White for a crisper white on the trim.

If had $5M to build a custom home, I wouldn’t start by picking the most expensive countertops, appliances or plumbing fixtures. I’d start with the architecture, and then I’d work my way through the things that have the biggest impact on how the home looks, functions and feels every day. Because at the end of the day, a bigger budget doesn’t always mean more. In my experience, the best homes usually show more restraint and are thoughtful about where the money goes (and just as thoughtful about where it doesn’t).

When it comes to building or remodeling your home, some splurges are worth every penny! Below are what we would personally splurge on:

1. Windows: Investing in quality doors and windows not only enhances your home’s aesthetics but also boosts energy efficiency.

2. Dropped Mech Room Floors: this is something we do in our builds so any unexpected water in the mechanical room stays in the mechanical room and doesn’t make its way into the rest of your house.

3. Wood Stairs: we love wood treads, they are so timeless and elegant, but we highly recommend installing a runner because without one, those buggers are SLIPPERY.
