United States Senator Susan Collins stopped by our office in Orono today. She spent time with our employee-owners talking about how employee ownership is building real wealth for Maine families.

The Senator also talked about the work she has done to bring infrastructure and wastewater funding to Maine, especially for rural communities that need it most.

Thanks to the Employee-Owned S Corporations of America (ESCA) for setting up the visit.

Throwback to just under a year ago, when a ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the opening of Exit 35 on the Maine Turnpike in S**o, the first new interchange along the turnpike in 20 years.

Sargent employee-owners broke ground on the project in late 2022 and spent three construction seasons building four new ramps, two toll plazas, a new collector-distributor road connecting Exit 35 to Exit 36, and improvements to Route 112, including a widened roadway and turning lane. Crews logged close to 80,000 work hours to get the job done, and it opened to traffic three weeks ahead of schedule.

A lot of credit for that goes to the field management team. Southern Maine Regional Manager Matt Thibault, who spoke at the ceremony, pointed to Superintendent James McCarthy (since promoted to New England Lead Estimator), who led the job for its first two years, and Junior Superintendents Shawn Powell and Jeff Shock, who took the reins in 2025 and helped phase the work to keep traffic moving and get the project substantially complete ahead of schedule. Sargent's fabrication shop in Stillwater also played a role, handling the structural steel for the toll plaza structures and canopies.

Congratulations to the whole crew who worked on Exit 35, and thanks for making sure Southern Maine drivers had a smoother way to get where they're going.

One hundred years looks good on this dozer. This custom-painted machine marks Sargent's 100th anniversary and it's been putting in work on the Route 1 bypass project in Presque Isle, Maine.

MaineDOT's bypass project has kept our crew busy up north this year, moving earth and building road on a project that'll serve the county for decades. Good to see the centennial paint job out on the job site where it belongs, not just sitting for photos.

Justin Embrey, our Talent & Workforce Outreach Specialist, and Operations Manager Nick Rosswog spent Saturday at Richmond Raceway for the 21st annual Richmond Touch a Truck. This was our second year in a row at the event, which the Junior League of Richmond puts on so kids can climb into the cab and get a close look at the trucks and equipment local companies use every day.

We brought one of our small excavators down for the day, and the seat didn't stay empty for long. Talking with families about the work our Mid-Atlantic crews do is a big part of why we make time for events like this, and you never know which of these kids will be running a machine for real someday.

One of the youngest operators on site was Nick's 1-year-old son, Emmett, who took a turn behind the controls with his dad. Thanks to the Junior League of Richmond for having us back this year.
