Here’s a look back on a good project in Limestone, Maine.

There's some history here. Back in 1951, company founder Herbert E. Sargent had a stone-crushing contract at what was then Loring Air Force Base. Decades later, his grandson, Herb R. Sargent, worked jobs at that same site.

Last November, Sargent crews were back at Loring, this time on sewer replacement for the Loring Development Authority of Maine. The job swapped out 10,000 feet of line and 40 manholes. Old clay pipe and brick manholes came out, PVC sewers and concrete manholes went in, with some trenches running 18 feet deep. Crews worked around an active broccoli packaging plant and kept every gallon of groundwater on site, dewatering trenches and pumping it right back into the ground.

About 20 employee-owners worked this job alongside local suppliers Trombley Industries, Inc. and Soderberg Construction Company. Crews pushed hard through the fall to beat the ground freeze, knowing winter in Limestone would shut things down until spring.

Employee-owners in our New Hampshire region have wrapped up the Stage 13 Liner System Project at Mt. Carberry Secure Landfill in Success, New Hampshire, a new 12-acre cell for the Androscoggin Valley Regional Refuse Disposal District.

Crews placed 45,000 cubic yards of low-permeability soil and about 40,000 cubic yards of screened sand to bring the cell up to grade, then installed a leachate collection system while RTD Enterprises handled the primary and secondary liners.

This cell picks up where an earlier groundwater separation project left off, work Sargent also completed at the same site back in 2023.

It was a short construction season, but tight coordination with the owner and engineer made for a good outcome. As Regional Manager Sean Milligan put it, this one went about as smooth as they come.

Fourteen weeks. Two regions. One lesson that stuck with all of them: nobody cares how much you know until they know how much you care.

That was the theme running through this summer's intern class in New England and the Mid-Atlantic. Our interns spent the summer in the field, hands-on, learning the trade the way it's actually learned. Not from a textbook, but from the crews around them. What they all have in common is this: you get out of it what you put into it, and this group put in the work.

This year also marked a new path in the Mid-Atlantic. The Sargent Construction Academy has always been a way for recent high school graduates to step straight into the field as employee-owners. This summer, three SCA students took that same hands-on training but are now headed to college this fall, making them SCA students and interns at the same time. It's a new way for young people to get real field experience before they decide what's next.
