October is Fire Prevention Month, and this week is Fire Prevention Week 🔥. This year’s theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging is a Superpower,” highlights safe charging habits for lithium‑ion batteries. It’s also a great time to assess your readiness to respond to a fire emergency at work, at home, or out in public.
Here are a few ways to stay prepared:
📞 911 Emergency Simulation: Practice what you would say to a dispatcher so responders can find you quickly. At home, let kids use toy phones to practice dialing 911 and reciting their address.
🔁 Stop, Drop, and Roll: Try it yourself and teach kids how to stop, drop, cover their face, and roll safely.
🔋 Battery Safety Sorting: Check all batteries and chargers to make sure they are in good condition and correctly paired. At home, let kids sort electronics and cords to learn safe charging habits.
♻️ Battery Recycling Drives: Partner with local waste facilities to safely discard old or damaged lithium‑ion batteries.
🏃 Escape Route Mapping: Identify two exits for every room and ensure everyone knows how to get out safely, even in smoke.
🚨 Smoke Detector Check: Test detectors, replace batteries, and install new units where needed. Place detectors inside bedrooms, outside sleeping areas, and on every level of your home.
Fire safety grows through awareness and action. Take time this week to ensure you and those around you are prepared.
