October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and it hits close to home for us. Our family has watched friends and loved ones fight this disease, and we’ve seen how much it asks of everyone around them too.
If you’re in the middle of it right now, whether it’s you or someone you love, please hear this: you are not alone, and you don’t have to hold everything together. When you’re busy just getting through the day, the rest of the list can wait.
There are people whose whole job is to help carry some of the weight. One place to start is the American Cancer Society helpline at 1-800-227-2345. It’s answered 24 hours a day, every day, and they can connect you with rides to treatment, lodging, and a survivor who has been where you are.
And to every woman reading this: please don’t put off your checkups. We’re all good at taking care of everyone else first. Schedule the mammogram, keep the appointment, and talk to your doctor about what screening is right for you. Catching it early makes all the difference.
If cost or lack of insurance is what’s holding you back, the American Breast Cancer Foundation (abcf.org) offers financial help for mammograms and diagnostic tests. You can apply right on their website.
If you’ve been through it and found something that helped (a support group, a local organization, a kind word that stuck with you), please drop it in the comments. Someone reading this may need it today.
Thinking of every family in this fight.
