Listening is about much more than just using our ears to hear.

It’s about being 100% present with the person in front of you- phones down, distractions aside, ego parked at the door. It’s choosing to listen more than you speak, to seek to understand instead of rushing to respond, and to notice what isn’t being said just as much as what is.

When leaders listen like that, people feel seen. Teams open up. Culture shifts.

Today, try this simple experiment: in your next conversation, talk less, listen longer, and get curious. Ask one more question than you normally would. Then watch what happens.

Because the leaders who build what matters most aren’t always the loudest in the room; they’re often the ones paying the closest attention.

It’s something they choose to feel.

There’s a moment in leadership- and in life- where we realize it’s not the big decisions that define us…

…it’s the small ones we make every single day.

In my book, Build What Matters, I wrote:

“Each choice we make to choose the positive side of life will ultimately determine our behavior and how we treat the people around us.”

That’s not just about mindset. It’s about impact.

Because positivity isn’t passive.

It’s a decision to lead with intention.

To respond instead of react.

To build people up- especially when it’s not easy.

The truth is, our teams don’t just hear what we say… they feel how we show up.

So today, I’m asking you (and reminding myself):

What does choosing the positive look like in your leadership right now?

Because when we build from that place-

Choose joy.

Choose kindness, even when it isn’t the easiest option.

The truth is, our mindset shapes the world around us. When we decide to show up with gratitude and compassion, we don’t just change our own day - we change someone else’s too.

I talk with leaders and teams every week about this. Your culture isn’t your poster, your website, or your mission statement. It’s how people actually treat each other when no one’s watching.

You know the difference:

Cultural ambassadors build people up, take ownership, and make it safe to speak up.

Culture vampires gossip, blame, and quietly suck the life out of your team.

If you’re in a leadership role (formal or informal), you’re modeling what’s ok. When we tolerate culture vampires because they hit the numbers, we trade short-term results for long-term damage.
