2025/2026 WNY Winter in review. The Information below is from the NWS Buffalo and provides some of the highlights from this past Winter.

-The winter of 2025-2026 was the coldest winter in over a decade.

-The November through February stretch was the coldest since the 2014-2015 winter for Buffalo and Rochester.

-Snowfall was above average across the majority of the area, with only the City of Buffalo and Northern Suburbs being slightly below average. The big winner for Lake Effect of off Lake Erie was Colden with 228.7"

-The cold season ended on a mild note, with above average temperatures and well below average snowfall from late February through March.

-A weak La Nina was in place across the equatorial Pacific Ocean during the winter of 2025-2026. Past research suggests that the probability of colder and snowier than normal winters increase the closer to neutral the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) index is, and that proved to hold true this winter.

Widespread snow will change over to rain or a rain/snow mix in
most areas this afternoon, with continued snow across the higher
terrain into Saturday morning leading to impactful accumulations
across the higher terrain east of Lake Erie, the Tug Hill, and
western Adirondacks.

The majority of the accumulating snowfall will come tonight across western New York, and from the second half of tonight through Wednesday east of Lake Ontario. The greatest amounts will be across the higher terrain east of both lakes.

Black ice may be around this morning. Watch for untreated surfaces such as sidewalks, parking lots, and driveways this morning.

Light to moderate snow will develop today with snow becoming more widespread tonight, with an arctic cold front possibly producing a few brief, heavy snow squalls and extremely hazardous travel. Gusty winds and snow will then continue to produce hazardous travel conditions at times into Saturday.

A prolonged period of snow Today-Tonight for our region, transitioning to lake enhanced snow Monday. Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect for all of Western and North Central NY today through Monday.

Significant lake effect snow is possible next week, starting Sunday night and lasting at least through Wednesday. Initial development Sunday night through Monday will be northeast of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario including Buffalo and Watertown, then lake snows move south of Buffalo and Watertown Monday night through Tuesday.

Widespread snow will move into the area this evening from west to east as a low pressure tracks near or just east of the area. Snow will transition to lake effect snow on Thursday into the first portion of Thursday night before weakening into Friday morning. Lake effect snow will focus on areas east and southeast of both Lake Erie & Ontario.
