Almost as much rain already in the first 5 days of September as the entire month of June. An iris I checked on yesterday with no signs of rot had completely fallen over today after 1.5” of rainfall between yesterday and now. More rain to come but at least about 10° cooler.

Are you getting your irises planted? I’m working on burning my fields so I can plant, the constant rain is not helping. For those of you still experiencing humidity and hot temperatures, be very careful not to overwater your irises. Keep a bleach water spray bottle in your garden so you are prepared if you see fans start getting mushy. I definitely discourage watering if you are still hot and humid and getting rot.

I’m here for questions and support.

It seems that many sellers have had a though time this year and are behind. It’s been crazy season, if they are communicating with you and letting you know what is going on that’s a good thing. If I can help in any way, please let me know.

As I have moved on to planting for next season, a little late as usual, I may have a few odds and ends I will be posting likely in the form of a package deal. If that interests you, please keep your eyes peeled.

Mother Nature has been cruel this year to so many people in our iris community. The Mid Atlantic area (South Carolina especially) has been battling harsh rains and heat, Oklahoma and Texas have had hardly any rain and record high temperatures. Now it seems many areas have soaring temperatures this week, it will be in the upper 90s in Virginia.

It is devastating to lose your irises for any reason, but for those of us who have in the past especially know the feeling of helplessness and do understand. I lost my garden in Texas about 12-13 years ago and it was painful. Grateful it’s been a smooth year for me. Praying for others.

PSA: Clumps that haven’t bloomed

Do you have an iris that is increasing well but hasn’t bloomed for you after two years in the ground?

Likely what had happened is the mother rhizome doesn’t have the room to bloom. What you should do is cut the mother out. The increases CANNOT bloom until that mother has bloomed, and by taking her out of the clump, it triggers the increases to bloom.
