Seeing more moths around your lawn lately? Don’t panic!
This time of year, we start getting more calls from homeowners worried about moths flying around their yards. But here’s the important thing: seeing moths does NOT automatically mean you have sod webworms.
Adult moths are simply part of the life cycle. They fly from lawn to lawn looking for suitable areas to lay eggs and find harborage. So you may see moths in your yard even when your lawn does not have an active infestation.
And if you do have sod webworms, you’ll generally see the damage before you see the adult moths and assume the moths are the problem. Look for signs such as:
• Small, irregular brown or thinning patches
• Grass blades that appear chewed or clipped
• Increased activity in the lawn, especially around dusk
• Small caterpillar-like larvae in the thatch or near the soil surface
So if you spot a few moths flying over your grass, don’t automatically assume your lawn is being damaged. Moths can simply be passing through or looking for a place to settle.
