Historic Remodel: The Standard 📸

A New Standard For An Omaha Original. This century-old Omaha landmark is starting to look a lot more like home. Inside The Standard, finishes are quickly taking shape across the future residential units. Cabinetry, countertops, tile, and other interior details are moving into place, while exposed elements of the original 1921 structure keep the building’s historic character front and center!

And there’s plenty happening beyond the original footprint. The new six-story addition will house the building’s main stairway, elevator, and trash chute. Crews are now working toward the final roof level, and the large framed opening along the addition will eventually become a glass-enclosed stairway, creating a modern connection alongside the century-old building.

Once complete, The Standard will bring 40 affordable multi-family units and 2 ground-floor commercial spaces to 18th & Howard, giving one of Omaha’s historic downtown buildings an entirely new purpose. Proud to help preserve a piece of Omaha’s past while creating a place people can call home for generations to come 🧱🪟🏠

You never really know what a historic renovation will uncover...

At 1501 Howard Street, two small finds recently brought the building’s former life as home to the Scott-Omaha Tent & Awning Co. back into focus.

📜 A Fragment Of An Original Scott-Omaha Sales Letter. Advertising an “Officers’ Wall Tent” and detailing its construction and Army-treated material. After years tucked away in the building's basement, portions of the company letterhead and typewritten specifications are still remarkably legible.

🪡 A Heavy-Duty Sewing Needle. Found wedged in the wood flooring, likely connected to the canvas and tent production that once filled this building. Scott-Omaha manufactured tents and other canvas goods here for decades, including extensive military production during both world wars.

They’re simple objects, but knowing they may have been handled or written inside the same walls we’re working in today makes them something a little more. A big thank you to our Superintendent, Gary, for spotting these pieces and taking the time to preserve them, and to Heather for the inspiration. During a historic renovation, sometimes the smallest discoveries tell the best stories.

// IWCC Student Center (2010)

From classrooms to campus life, some of the most important learning happens in the spaces in between. Our back-to-school spotlight finishes at Iowa Western, where Lueder helped create a central hub designed for students to connect!

Lueder constructed the 70,000 SF Student Center on IWCC’s Council Bluffs campus, bringing together a full-service kitchen and dining center, student store, café, study areas, and offices within a single facility. The commercial kitchen and food preparation spaces also support Iowa Western’s Culinary Arts program, giving students a place to develop their skills in a real-world environment while serving the broader campus community.

The result was a student-focused facility built to support both education and the everyday college experience. Another great example of how thoughtful construction can help shape the places where students learn, explore, and grow 🚌✏️🧠

// Johnson Crossing Academic Center (2012)

Our back-to-school tour continues. This time, we’re heading to Fremont, NE, to revisit Johnson Crossing Academic Center, another educational space Lueder helped build for the everyday moments of learning and discovery.

We partnered with Fremont Public Schools to construct the 10,000 SF 5th & 6th-grade academic center, featuring classrooms, a media center, band room, and a full-sized gymnasium and kitchen. Each grade utilizes its own wing of the building with multi-use gathering areas. A centrally located commons area with full natural light is the highlight upon entering this facility.

The same problem-solving skills this school was designed to foster were also put to work during construction. A rainy spring complicated geothermal installation beneath the parking lot, requiring temporary water-diversion measures to keep drilling moving. Later, a brief break in the wet fall gave the team the window needed to complete a 1,200-yard concrete parking lot pour in a single overnight operation. When elevated slab moisture threatened interior flooring, the team adjusted again, grinding the concrete surface to release trapped moisture and keep finishes on schedule.

The result was a well-rounded learning environment built to support students throughout the school day. Another great example of how thoughtful construction can help shape the places where students learn, explore, and grow 🚌✏️🧠

// Westside Middle School (2018)

There’s a different kind of energy when school is back in session: busy hallways, full classrooms, and spaces once again become the backdrop for learning and new experiences. This week, we’re revisiting several educational projects Lueder has helped build for those moments, starting with Westside Middle School!

We partnered with Westside Community Schools on a 62,750 SF renovation and a 22,259 SF addition, transforming the building into a flexible, modern learning environment that accommodates diverse learning styles. The reimagined space features collaborative learning areas with movable furniture, a dedicated STEAM wing, a central library with a genius bar and media studio, flexible student commons, branded learning-team floors, and updated classrooms throughout.

Behind the scenes, the project also included new mechanical systems, enhanced security, and improved circulation, creating a more functional, future-ready school for students and staff. Another great example of how thoughtful construction can help shape the places where students learn, explore, and grow 🚌✏️🧠

Calling All Future Builders 🏗️

Mark those calendars, because one month from today, the American Cancer Society's Big Dig Omaha is giving kids the chance to trade their toy trucks for the real thing!

This FREE, family-friendly event lets kids get up close with the machines that build our communities, including excavators, backhoes, scissor lifts, construction vehicles and more. Add in hayrack rides, a sandbox play area and plenty to explore, and you’ve got an afternoon built for the whole family.

Lueder Construction is proud to sponsor an event that supports the American Cancer Society Nebraska and gives the next generation a firsthand look at the construction industry. For a kid, getting behind the controls of a machine can be more than a fun afternoon. It can spark an interest in becoming an operator, tradesperson, engineer, mechanic, superintendent, project manager, designer, or one of the many people it takes to bring a project to life.
