Quick video of Thomas grinding out and remove old lime mortar joints. Combo of using a grinder with a shop vacuum system and a rotary hammer makes quick work of it all.

Gonna try to post more videos of breaking down our process on certain projects. Here's the first one demonstrating and explaining how we are matching lime mortar

Video of how Thomas fills in the ground out mortar joints for tuck pointing. Using a hawk, pointing trowels and slicks. Then using two different brushes to tamp and compact the joints leaving a nice clean and full finish.

Continuing our catch up series here is one of our proudest projects. This last spring we were hired to repair three sets of stairs going down to the rose garden at The Arbor Lodge in Nebraska City. What started out as repairs turned into a full rebuild, especially the largest set of stairs. Thomas removed the bricks by hand and reclaimed the ones fit to reuse. The inner structure of the stairs were layed up with field stones at the base and then filled to height with brick. We made the base water tight and removed any loose or damaged material and slowly rebuilt the bones of the stairs. Then using the reclaimed and matching brick from the lodge, Thomas rebuilt the stairs to how they were. Starting with the outer walls to set our leads. The walls were built using a Flemish bond giving it a stronger build with better bonding between the brick courses. The top and front faces were then laid in and everything was washed and sealed. The next phase will be repairing the garden walls. We are honored to be part of this project and to be working with Nebraska Game and Parks and The Arbor Lodge Foundation.

On the other side , Olk Masonry has been hitting the road this week pretty hard connecting with customers and lining up new restoration projects. Our next priority after the Wattles Mansion is the First Congregational Church in Glenwood, IA. Founded in 1856, this Church was finished in 1858 and had the exterior refurbished in the 1950's which is now failing. We will be restoring the brickwork to it's original state from the 1850's in phases and strengthening the walls where needed. It is the oldest Church in Glenwood and is a historical treasure of southwestern Iowa. We look forward to working on this.

Some small repair jobs from this spring. A tile brick step that had bad water and salt damage and a small chimney rebuild. Matched material and repaired as if it was never damaged.

We have been so busy we haven't posted since last December! So we are gonna play a little catch up and show you what we've been up to.
This last spring Thomas started restoration work on the basement/foundation walls of First Congregational Church in Glenwood Iowa. Removing damaged and deteriorating brick, bowed sections of the walls and tuck pointing any mortar joints. The next phase of restoration is the exterior walls of the church.
