Not every drip is a leak.

During hot, humid weather, warm moisture-filled air can come into contact with cooler building surfaces, leading to condensation. Ductwork, chilled-water piping, diffusers, and other components can all become potential sources of moisture.

When water damage is discovered, determining whether the moisture came from condensation, plumbing, or exterior water intrusion can be an important part of identifying the cause.

KPE’s forensic engineers evaluate the conditions and physical evidence to help determine where the moisture originated and why.

Planning for your facility’s future starts with understanding where it stands today.

A facility assessment can help identify aging building systems, maintenance needs, potential improvements, and priorities before they become unexpected problems.

KPE’s architecture and engineering team evaluates facilities as a whole, helping owners turn existing conditions into a practical plan for what comes next.

Assess. Prioritize. Plan.

With the heavy rain we’ve experienced lately, water intrusion can quickly become a concern for buildings of all types.

Where water damage appears isn’t always where the water entered. Moisture can travel through roofing systems, wall assemblies, flashing, windows, and other building components before becoming visible inside.

KPE’s forensic engineers evaluate the evidence to help identify the source and cause of water intrusion and determine the extent of resulting damage.

Forensic Friday: Hail Damage to Metal Roofs

A metal roof can show dozens of hail dents and still shed water. So when evaluating a hail claim, the question isn’t simply whether the roof was hit—it’s what the storm actually changed.

For this week’s Forensic Friday, we’re featuring an article on exploring how forensic engineers distinguish between functional damage and cosmetic change on metal roofing systems.

Progress continues at Stanton Community School District!

The renovation and addition are well underway, and as students and staff head back to school, the newly renovated classrooms are ready to welcome them back.

Work on the addition will continue into the school year with minor interruptions as construction moves forward. It’s exciting to see the project take shape while the school remains active and ready for another great year.

High summer temperatures can put expansion joints to the test. As materials expand, joints must accommodate movement without losing their ability to seal and protect the building.

Forensic evaluations focus on joint condition, material performance, and installation detailing to determine whether movement was properly managed or contributed to failure.

📍It’s Where Are We Wednesday! 📍

Chad was in Bancroft, Nebraska, out in the field for a forensic site visit. Being on-site is a key part of the investigative process, allowing us to observe conditions firsthand, document findings, and better understand the factors contributing to an issue.

It’s all part of delivering clear, accurate conclusions our clients can rely on.

Summer storms and grid fluctuations can lead to power surges that impact building electrical systems. Damage isn’t always immediately visible and can affect equipment performance over time.

Forensic investigations focus on evaluating system components, identifying points of failure, and determining whether conditions such as surge protection, grounding, or installation played a role.
