October weekends were made for a good fire pit.

There's something pretty satisfying about wrapping up a Friday, pulling a few chairs around the fire, and settling in with good company and absolutely nowhere else you need to be.

A little music, something good to drink, maybe a few marshmallows for the kids. Before you know it, a quick hour outside has turned into the better part of the evening.

We've designed and built plenty of outdoor spaces with evenings like these in mind. From natural stone fire pits to built-in gas fire features, the right layout, seating and surrounding landscape can make the backyard everyone's favorite gathering place.

This time of year, when the air gets a little crisp and the fire feels especially good, you really appreciate having that space waiting for you. 🔥

Here's a little fall landscaping debate that comes up every year.

When do you cut back your ornamental grasses? Fall or spring?

Some homeowners prefer a clean, tidy landscape heading into winter. Once the grasses have finished their growing season, they cut them back and get everything cleaned up before the snow flies.

Others leave them standing until spring, and there's good reason for that, too. Ornamental grasses can bring some beautiful texture and movement to an otherwise quiet winter landscape. Their seed heads catch the snow, provide some shelter for wildlife, and give the yard a little character during the colder months.

For many established ornamental grasses, either approach can work, although leaving them standing until late winter or early spring is often beneficial. The variety, condition of the plant and your personal preference all play a part.

Pirates have arrived in Omaha, but these little troublemakers aren't interested in your treasure. ☠🏴

If you've been enjoying the beautiful fall weather and suddenly felt a surprisingly sharp bite from something barely visible, you've probably met the minute pirate bug.

These tiny black-and-white insects are common around Nebraska landscapes, particularly this time of year. Throughout the growing season, they're actually pretty helpful, feeding on aphids, mites, thrips and other insects that can damage plants.

Come fall, as crops are harvested and their usual food sources decline, they become more noticeable around people. And for something barely an eighth of an inch long, they can deliver a heck of a bite!

The good news? They don't feed on human blood, aren't known to transmit diseases, and their bites are generally harmless, although they can cause temporary redness or irritation. Unfortunately, your usual bug spray probably won't help much. Here are a few ways to make your time outside more comfortable:

- Wear long sleeves and pants, preferably darker colors, to limit exposed skin.
- Plan outdoor work or activities for cooler, cloudy days or evenings when they're less active.
- Skip spraying the entire yard. These insects are beneficial predators, and broad insecticide treatments aren't a practical solution.
- Be patient. Their biting activity generally subsides as colder weather arrives.

So if you're out enjoying your patio, tending the garden, or working around the yard and something tiny delivers a surprisingly memorable bite, now you know who's responsible.

Apparently, even the pirates appreciate a beautiful Nebraska fall.

After all that rain, this stretch of sunshine feels pretty darn good.
.. and take a look at the evenings ahead! Clear skies, cooler temperatures and the kind of October weather that makes you want to stay outside long after dinner is over. Now imagine having the space for it.

A patio with room to settle in, a fire feature warming up a cool evening, the sound of water nearby, and trees, grasses and plantings taking on their fall character, with landscape lighting bringing everything to life after the sun goes down.

That’s when a backyard starts feeling less like the space behind your house and more like your own little retreat.

October evenings in Nebraska don’t last forever, but they’re awfully good while they’re here.

This review landed a little differently this week.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The September 30 storm put homes and landscapes across the Omaha area to a test few of us expected, and for this homeowner, heavy rain had meant a flooded basement for years.

Earlier, Jay and the team replaced a 34-year-old retaining wall and extended the property's drainage pipe. After everything that came down Tuesday night, their basement stayed dry.

We're grateful Lisa took the time to share that with us, and even more grateful the work performed when they needed it most.

There are plenty of people around our community dealing with water and property damage right now, and we don't take that lightly. We hope the cleanup goes quickly and safely for everyone affected.

We’ve talked quite a bit lately about watching how rain moves through your property, where water collects, and what prolonged wet weather can reveal about drainage.

Last night was something altogether different.

An extraordinary amount of rain fell across the Omaha area in a matter of hours, overwhelming streets, storm systems, yards and homes. Many of our neighbors woke up to flooded basements, damaged property and a long day of cleanup ahead.

Our thoughts today are with everyone dealing with that mess.

Once the water recedes and the immediate cleanup is behind us, there will be time to look at what happened around our properties. Where water entered, where it backed up, how it traveled across the landscape, where erosion occurred, and where saturated ground created new problems will all be worth documenting.

Some of what happened last night simply exceeded what residential drainage systems and landscapes are designed to handle. Still, the evidence left behind can help identify vulnerabilities worth addressing before the next heavy storm.

For now, take care of yourselves, help a neighbor if you can, and give the ground some time to recover.

Caught the boss doing what he loves...

Jay was out giving the landscaping around the shop a little attention, watering, checking things over and apparently proving that after all these years, he still can't walk past a plant without stopping to take care of it.

When landscaping has been your business for more than 30 years, some habits are pretty well rooted.

We’ve had our share of rain lately, and it looks like we’re going to stay in that pattern for a few more days.

For your landscape, several days of repeated rainfall can tell you quite a bit. Soil becomes saturated, low areas begin holding water longer, mulch starts traveling, slopes can show signs of erosion, and drainage issues that were easy to miss during a quick summer storm become much more obvious.

Keep an eye on your property while the ground is this wet. Watch where water collects, where it moves, and how long those areas take to dry once the rain lets up. Check around retaining walls, downspouts, patios, walkways and the foundation as well.

If something doesn’t look right, grab a photo while it’s happening. Jay Moore Landscaping can help identify the cause and develop a drainage, grading, retaining wall or landscape solution that makes sense for your property.

For now, we’ll keep one eye on the radar and wait for a little working weather.

Patio season gets pretty good around here once fall settles in. 🍂

The afternoon heat backs off, dinner outside becomes comfortable again, and a fire feels especially good once the sun goes down. Add some well-placed landscape lighting and there are plenty of reasons to keep using the backyard long after summer ends.

This is also when homeowners tend to notice what would make the space more useful. Maybe it's a fire feature, better lighting, a little more privacy, or enough patio space to comfortably fit everyone around the table.

Pay attention to how you're using your outdoor space this fall. You may find the idea for next year's project while you're sitting in it!

The arrival of fall doesn't close the book on planting season...

Cooler air puts less stress on newly planted trees and shrubs, while the soil still holds plenty of warmth for root development. Add the moisture we've been getting lately, now is the perfect time for establishing new plant material.

It's a particularly good time to think about trees and shrubs you've been wanting to add for shade, privacy, structure or seasonal interest. Plant them with enough time to begin establishing roots before winter, and they'll have a head start when growth resumes in spring.

There's still good work to be done in the landscape this year!
