Do I still water before winter?

Just because it's chilly doesn't mean your landscape has stopped getting thirsty!

Trees, shrubs, and evergreens can benefit from watering during dry fall weather, especially before the ground freezes.

Don't put the hose away just yet. A little hydration now can help your landscape handle winter's dry conditions.

It's sweater weather for your shrubs! You have your favorite fall sweater. Your plants need a little winter protection, too!

Adding a layer of mulch around trees and shrubs helps insulate roots, retain moisture, and protect against temperature swings.

Just remember: Mulch around the base, not piled against the trunk. Think cozy blanket, not turtleneck!

As temperatures drop, your grass starts slowing down, but don't put that mower away just yet!

Keep mowing as needed while your lawn is still growing. For most cool-season lawns, a final mowing height around 2.5–3 inches helps prepare your grass for winter without leaving it too long or cutting it too short.

We know that freshly mowed look is tempting, but mowing wet grass can do more harm than good.

Wet grass tends to bend instead of cutting cleanly, which can leave your lawn looking uneven and ragged. Clippings can also clump together, smother the grass underneath and clog up your mower. Plus, mowing on soggy soil can create ruts and compact the ground.

Your best bet? Give the lawn some time to dry out before firing up the mower. Sometimes procrastinating on yard work is actually the responsible choice.
