Bees in action!!! These two female bi-colored sweet bees are both biting the stamen (the stalks) with their mandibles, to buzz pollinate this flower. They vibrate their wing muscles to shake the pollen off. Simultaneously, they are using their legs to collect and pack the pollen onto the hairs on their back legs (called scopae).

Buzz pollination is powerful method of pollination that honey bees aren’t capable of doing. Tomatoes and some other garden vegetables require buzz pollination, so look for bumble bees near your beds.

This is also why planting flowers near your veg gardens can increase your pollination rates and vegetable yields. Each flower needs to be pollinated to turn into a tomato, pepper, etc Every pollination event on the flower leads to a larger fruit.

How very cool!!!

We have pearly everlasting! If you’d like to see more butterflies in your yard, this one is for you!

Pearly everlasting is a host plant to the American Lady butterfly.

These flowers are tiny but hold their shape well when dried so could be used for art or projects.

Last year, we had several caterpillars on our one plant. Then saw American Lady butterflies, but they seemed to be a more cautious species and I didn’t get a picture of the adults. Hoping to this year with my new camera and zoom lens!

We’re open today if you’d like to stop by.

Skate Park Garden Workshops.

We got our first bed started, talked about the pros and cons of using cardboard & mulch to start a garden bed, tried some serviceberry fruits, pulled bindweed, put some more plants in by the fence, and took some plants home. What a great morning!

Come join us next week when we start a garden bed using solarization! This site is a good candidate for solarization due to the heavy bindweed presence.

Join us tomorrow to start a new garden bed at the Walnut Hill Skate Park. We’re going to talk about the pros and cons of doing the cardboard and mulch method. Then we will lay out the cardboard and mulch for a new bed!

This bed will be planted in two weeks during the week 3 session where we talk about planting for pollinators.

These workshops are designed for all ages. Children should be accompanied by an adult. We’d love to see you there!

Happy Nebraska Wildflower Week!

To celebrate, here are some native bee pictures from my garden today. Who else is seeing increased bee activity? Let’s see pictures!!!

I saw three species of bumble bees, small carpenter bees, bi colored sweat bees, a solid green sweat bee, and then the non-native wool carder and honey bees.

For me, it’s like, “Hello friends, I’m glad you’re back!” 🥰

🌻 Garden Workshop Collab with SkateFest Omaha! 🌻

🌻 Starting June 6th, we’ll be leading garden club *workshops* at the Walnut Hill Skate Park on 41st and Hamilton St. Each workshop will cover a different topic and take participants through preparing a garden, planting, and troubleshooting. These workshops are free to anyone at any gardening level!

🌻 This is such a cool collaboration because we will be learning about native gardens, beautifying a public space, helping the ecosystem, and building community! Huge thanks to SkateFest Omaha for sponsoring these workshops!

🌻 SkateFest will be running skate club at the same time at the park. So tell a skateboard-loving friend or bring some kids along to join.

Progress at the skate park gardens feels slow but I remind myself the adage I tell people every week:

The first year they sleep.

The second year they creep.

The third year they leap.

This is even more true for highly disturbed, poor quality soils.

Though, the raised beds we planted last June seem to be skipping creep and straight to leap. I’ll be cutting back the asters in the raised beds soon. Both heath and aromatic asters are gigantic.
