Balancing Ambition and Stewardship: Two Decades of Shaping a Campus Environment

Our amazing Field Day keynote speaker is Kristine Kenney, ASLA, LEED AP

Kristine is the University Landscape Architect & Director of Campus Planning + Architecture for the University of Washington.

The presentation will explore how campus landscapes are shaped over time through the balance of ambition and stewardship. Drawing on two decades of work across multiple campuses, it examines how long-term planning, incremental capital projects, and ecological systems collectively form coherent and resilient environments. Rather than treating landscape as a backdrop to development, the discussion positions it as the organizing framework that connects buildings, infrastructure, and human experience. It highlights how landscape architects guide change in ways that strengthen identity, ecological performance, and everyday usability across evolving campus contexts.

You aren't going to miss this keynote!

The lunchtime session and all of the walking tours qualify for HSW LACES, so be sure to register if you still need your credits.

Be sure to register this week before rates increase!

FIELD DAY TOUR SPOTLIGHT: MAKING SPACE—EXPANDING THE PUBLIC REALM IN THE U DISTRICT

What if the next great public space isn’t a park?

Walk through Seattle’s U District and see how streets, plazas, murals, art installations, private development, and community programming are being connected into a larger public-realm network. This behind-the-scenes tour will examine tactical urbanism, placemaking, public art, funding, partnerships, stewardship, and the ongoing work required to keep urban spaces active, welcoming, and resilient.

Participants will visit projects along NE 42nd Street, NE 43rd Street, Brooklyn Avenue, and surrounding gathering spaces—with the possibility of encountering installations or artwork in progress.

Presenters: Janet Lee, AICP, Urban Vitality Manager, U District Partnership; Aaron Hoard, UW Director of Regional & Community Relations, Don Blakeney, Executive Director of the U District Partnership; Marcus Johnson, Director of Clean & Safe for the U District Partnership

LA CES: 1–2 HSW credits
