This has been a passion project for the team at Mallard Brothers. For us, building homes is only part of the job. We also want to take responsibility for the materials that make them possible. Through the Mallard Brothers tree offset program, we plant native trees each year to help offset the lumber used in our projects, and give something back to the forests and communities we build in.

First up: framing, electrical, and plumbing—the home’s skeleton and nervous system. This stage includes a pre-insulation inspection to make sure everything is installed correctly before the walls are closed up. Thanks to the awesome teams at Alpine Ductless and Bazail Plumbing, we passed with flying colors. 👏

Next came insulation. Huge shoutout to Boulton Insulation for another clean, efficient job. David & Sonia have been intentional about using healthier, low-toxicity materials throughout their home, which is why we chose Rockwool insulation. Not only is it a great insulation product, but it’s also incredible for sound dampening.

Since music is such a big part of their lives, we insulated every interior wall—not just bathrooms and laundry rooms—to help create a quieter, more enjoyable living space. 🎶

The latest milestone is drywall, and D&G Drywall & Paint absolutely delivered. Their craftsmanship and efficiency never disappoint, and they make a difficult trade look effortless. After another smooth inspection, they’re already wrapping up the mudding stage (which means either they’re incredibly fast... or I took too long to post this 😅).

Next up: primer, texture, another coat of primer, and we’re getting even closer to the finish line!

The first video we took was in December, the second video was taken three weeks ago. David and Sonia have been living in this home for nearly 2 decades. As you can see, they have fantastic taste in wall art! Those banjos are awesome! However, they were running out of room and functional storage space, on top of that their house‘s foundation was not properly supported. After sitting down with them for an hour and a half on my first visit, we came to the conclusion this house was ready for an update. The exciting news for all of you reading this is that this is going to be one of our tour of Home’s projects! I don’t want to give away too much of the fun as this custom remodel is going to full of beautiful surprises! With “green” and “reclaimed” playing a huge part in the entirety of the project. Stay tuned 😏

While we’re finishing up a couple other projects here is a beauty we finished up a couple months ago. Labeled on Mallardbros.com as the “Presidintial Kitchen.” This project started as an insurance reconstruction, those darn dishwashers have been a real advocate for kitchen remodels. Luckily our clients had fantastic taste and we (our rockstars Sam and Marty) have fantastic ex*****on!

This kitchen highlights a full tiled floor meeting with the living room hardwood flawlessly, a large island for entertaining with a built in mini fridge and microwave to save counter space. Speaking of counter space, our clients chose inset outlets in order to keep the gorgeous backsplash the statement it is, without interruption. The oven is a statement in itself that needed highlighted by the inset tile detail that our lead executed to perfection, accenting that detail with the inlay over the sink, beautiful centered on the faucet.

Welcome back to the corner-less home! This is what happens when you have finish carpenters get the siding they wanted, tight perfection. Our man Keenan and Keoki rocking out this siding with the help of Julian, a very talented carpenter, took on the challenge of doing a vertical cedar siding so clean it looks like the wall doesn’t stop. Combining the clean lines of the vertical siding with a tight fit negates any ability to hide mistakes or sloppiness with trim. Executing this requires precision and attention to detail (see the last post in angled furring strips for water shedding). This is what inspires Mallard as a company. These ADU’s are a passion of Mallard, infill and generational housing is a necessity in Western Washington and much like our signature vault, I hope this style of siding starts taking over our projects. Stay tuned for interior finishes coming up!
