Low water pressure in Kansas City homes is one of the most frustrating plumbing problems — because nothing is obviously broken. The water still runs. It just runs weakly.

And most homeowners adapt to it for months or years before realizing it's actually fixable.

Here's the first question that narrows everything down:

👉 IS IT ONE FIXTURE OR THE WHOLE HOUSE?

🔵 LOW PRESSURE AT ONE FIXTURE ONLY
Almost always a clogged aerator — that small screen at the tip of your faucet. Kansas City's hard water (9-12 grains per gallon) deposits mineral scale in aerators constantly. Remove it. Soak in white vinegar. Reinstall. Pressure often returns immediately. If not, check that the shut-off valve under that fixture is fully open.

This is the more serious category. Most common causes:

→ Pressure Reducing Valve failure — a bell-shaped device where the main line enters your home. When PRVs fail after 10-15 years, they restrict whole-house pressure. This is one of the most common and most overlooked causes we find in Kansas City homes.

→ Corroded galvanized pipes — if your home was built before the 1980s and has never been repiped, the original galvanized steel supply pipes may have corroded from the inside out over decades. What started as a 3/4" pipe may now have an effective interior diameter of 1/4" or less. Low pressure is often the first visible symptom of a repiping situation that's been building for years.

→ Municipal supply — some Kansas City neighborhoods, particularly elevated areas or those at the end of long distribution runs, receive lower supply pressure. Confirming whether the problem starts before the water even enters your home changes the fix entirely.

🔵 HOT WATER PRESSURE ONLY — COLD IS FINE?
The water heater is the likely culprit. Check both shut-off valves on the unit. If those are open, professional evaluation determines whether sediment flushing resolves it.
