Planning a retaining wall? The base layer matters more than most people realize. We always lay compacted gravel at least 6 inches deep before any block or stone goes down.
It prevents shifting, keeps drainage flowing away from the wall, and gives you a structure that'll hold strong for years instead of leaning after the first heavy rain. Skip that step, and you're rebuilding sooner than you'd like.
