This connection directs roof runoff straight into the new 4-inch PVC drain line, where it can flow toward the existing curb outlet instead of emptying on to the patio and flooding it and creating soggy areas in the yard.

We used a wye and 45-degree connection to introduce the water gradually in the direction of flow. This smoother transition creates less resistance than a sharp 90-degree tee and helps reduce the chance of backups during heavy rain.

Once all three downspouts are connected, the system will manage both roof runoff and surface water collected by the three 9” × 9” basins.

Small details underground make a big difference when the rain starts falling!

Today is a sad day on our little homestead. We lost this cutie in a hawk attack this morning, and our hearts are heavy.

This photo is from last week, when she managed to break out of the yard and ended up in our neighbor’s driveway. A little escape artist with a personality we’ll miss so much. She was going to be a beautiful bird when she reached maturity with the lovely colors, laying a blue egg and that cute mohawk.

Raising chickens brings so much joy, but days like this are a heartbreaking part of owning and caring for a flock. Predators are a real risk, and losing a bird you’ve watched grow and cared for never gets easy.

We share plenty of happy moments with our chickens, but this is part of their story, too. Each one has a personality and a place in our hearts.

Rest easy, sweet girl. You were loved, and you’ll be missed.

This drainage project is about 90% complete!

The new 4-inch PVC system is installed, the trench has been backfilled and the disturbed soil has been leveled to begin restoring the yard.

This system replaces the failed flexible corrugated pipe and includes three 9” × 9” collection basins connected to the existing drain that exits through the curb.

We still have a few finishing touches left:

✅ Tie the three downspouts into the new drain line
✅ Add decorative rock around the collection grates
✅ Complete a final inspection and flow test

Most of the work will soon be hidden underground, but the difference will show every time it rains. The new system will collect both roof runoff and surface water, then provide it with a smoother, properly sloped route off the property.

Stay tuned for the finished reveal!

The new 4-inch PVC drain line is in place and glued together!

After preparing and sloping the trench, we measured and fitted each section of PVC, installed the necessary wye connections and permanently glued the joints to create one continuous drainage system.

The smooth interior of the PVC, properly directed fittings and consistent slope will help move water efficiently toward the existing line that exits through the curb.

This system is being built to collect water from:

✅ Three downspouts
✅ Three 9” × 9” collection basins
✅ Problem areas where surface water gathers

Next, we’ll finish the remaining connections, test the system and prepare everything for backfilling.

Replacing the failed corrugated pipe with properly installed PVC will provide a stronger and more dependable long-term solution for this property.

It’s not just about connecting the pipe—it’s about helping the water flow in the right direction.

Here’s a closer look at how we tied one of the downspouts into the new 4-inch PVC drain line. We used a wye fitting with a 45-degree connection, allowing the downspout water to enter the main line gradually and continue toward the curb outlet.

Why use a wye instead of a standard tee?

A tee introduces water at a sharp 90-degree angle, creating more turbulence and resistance inside the pipe. That sudden turn can slow the flow and increase the chance of water backing up during heavy rainfall.

The wye creates a smoother transition that:

✅ Directs water with the flow of the main line
✅ Reduces turbulence and resistance
✅ Lowers the chance of backups
✅ Helps leaves and small debris move through the system
✅ Improves the overall efficiency of the drain

Small fitting choices can make a big difference in how a drainage system performs over time.

The trench is open and ready for PVC!

We used a trencher to open the route for this new drainage system, then shoveled out the loose soil by hand and shaped the bottom of the trench to establish the proper slope.

That preparation is an important step. A drainage system relies on consistent fall to keep water moving toward the existing line that exits through the curb.

Next, we’ll begin piecing together the new 4-inch PVC system, connecting:

✅ Three downspouts
✅ Three 9” × 9” collection basins
✅ The existing curb outlet

The failed flexible corrugated pipe is being replaced with a smoother, stronger and more dependable drainage system built for long-term performance.

Stay tuned as the pieces start coming together!

Happy International Coffee Day! ☕️

This cappuccino from The Capital Grille came with a rock candy stick for stirring, which was such a fun little touch. A little cinnamon on top, a quiet moment, and one more excuse to order coffee after dinner.

What’s your go-to coffee order?

New drainage project underway!

This property currently has flexible corrugated drainpipe underground, but the system has failed and is no longer moving water properly. We’ll be removing the old pipe and replacing it with a properly sloped 4-inch PVC drain line for a stronger, smoother and more dependable drainage system.

The new system will:

✅ Connect three downspouts
✅ Add three 9” × 9” collection basins to capture surface water
✅ Replace the failed corrugated pipe with 4-inch PVC
✅ Tie into the existing drain line that exits through the curb
✅ Give roof runoff and standing water a clear route off the property

Before trenching, we transferred our drainage design onto the yard with marking paint. This allows us to confirm the pipe route, collection points and required slope before digging begins.

Sometimes solving a drainage problem means removing what failed and rebuilding the system correctly from the ground up.

New drainage project underway!

For this property, we designed a system that will connect three downspouts into a buried drain line and add three 9” × 9” collection basins to capture surface water from problem areas throughout the yard.

The new drainage will tie into an existing underground line that already exits through the curb, giving the collected water a clear route off the property.

Before trenching, we transferred the design onto the yard with marking paint. These lines show the planned pipe route, basin locations and connection points so we can verify the layout and maintain the proper slope before breaking ground.

The goal is to collect both roof runoff and standing surface water, then move it safely away from the home and out through the existing curb outlet.

Follow along as we turn the plan into a working drainage solution!

Another drainage project finished!

We connected two front downspouts to a buried drainpipe, carefully sloped the system downhill and directed the runoff to an exit basin in the side yard.

Once everything was connected and tested, we backfilled the trench, raked the disturbed soil and tamped it thoroughly to reduce settling. The goal is always to leave behind a drainage system that works underground while making the yard look as though we were barely there.

Now, instead of collecting near the home and walkway, rainwater has a clear path away from the foundation.
