Healthcare design comes to life in a recent KFOR segment featuring the full-scale cardboard mockups created for SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital’s Main Campus’ 4th floor cath lab.

Scott Parker, Director of Operations at Miller, and Dr. Jeevanantham, an interventional cardiologist at SSM Health, discuss how this hands-on programming exercise allows clinical staff to experience and evaluate proposed spaces before construction begins.

The segment also follows SSM Health staff as they move a mock patient through the cardboard layouts, testing room configurations, equipment placement and clinical workflows in real time. The feedback gathered during these simulations will help the design team refine the floor plan around the needs of the people who will use these spaces every day.

How do you test a hospital floor plan before construction begins? You build it at full scale.

As part of the programming process for SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital’s Main Campus, project plans were transformed into life-size cardboard mockups within the already demolished area of the hospital. Tape outlined each space, while critical areas, including multiple patient room configurations, the cath lab control room and the cath lab itself, were constructed with walls, windows and door openings.

The cath lab mockup was even equipped with real clinical equipment, allowing physicians, nurses, technologists and other clinical team members to simulate procedures and emergency code responses in the proposed environment. Staff also moved beds and stretchers through corridors and into rooms, performed patient room workflows and tested whether the planned spaces provided enough room to work safely and efficiently.

These hands-on simulations gave the clinical team an opportunity to provide immediate, practical feedback to the design team. Those insights will directly inform the next iteration of the floor plan, helping the design respond to real people, real equipment and real workflows long before construction begins.

A recent visit to Lilyfield gave two of our Architectural Associates, Leonardo Zesatti and Jordan McReynolds, the opportunity to share their passion for architecture with a group of local students.

Through hands-on activities and conversation, they introduced students to the design process, answered questions about what architects do, and encouraged them to think creatively about the spaces around them. Seeing the students' curiosity and excitement made the experience rewarding for everyone involved.

Lilyfield serves at-risk children and youth by helping provide safe, healthy, and nurturing homes where they can grow and thrive. We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with an organization that is making such a meaningful impact in our community.

Thank you to Lilyfield for welcoming us into your classroom. Experiences like these remind us how valuable it is to share knowledge, build connections, and invest in the next generation!
