Being a Shellback means earning your place through perseverance, teamwork, and a willingness to take on whatever comes your way. We believe those same qualities matter on every project we take on.

At Shellback General Contracting, we show up with Energy. We build with Quality. We work with Unity. We lead with Integrity. And we put People first.

That’s what the Shellback name means to us.

Know a fellow Shellback? Tag them below or send us your Crossing the Line story. We’re sending Shellback T-shirts to the Shellbacks we hear from!

We had a chance to sit down with our own Matt Richardson to talk about his time in the Navy as a Shellback and how it shaped him as a leader and business owner. ⚓️

What does it mean to be a Shellback?

In the Navy, a Pollywog is a sailor who hasn’t yet crossed the Equator. Once they make the journey, they take part in the centuries-old “Crossing the Line” ceremony and earn the title of Shellback.

But the tradition represents more than crossing a line. It’s about perseverance, teamwork, pride, and camaraderie.

Those are qualities we’re proud to carry into our work every day, and they’re a big part of why we chose the name Shellback General Contracting.

Are you a Shellback? Tell us where you crossed the line or tag a Navy buddy who earned the honor with you! We would love to send you a Shellback t-shirt.

Congratulations to Shellback’s own Carly Richardson on being honored with the Visionary Award for Visionary Leadership and Dedication to UCREW at CREW-OKC’s 10th Anniversary Gala!

Carly’s leadership, vision, and commitment to investing in others have made a lasting impact throughout the commercial real estate community and at Shellback.

We’re incredibly proud to see her recognized for the leader she is and the difference she continues to make. This award is so well deserved, Carly! We’re lucky to have you leading the way.

We were proud to sponsor Shred Cancer Association’s 8th annual Bags & Beers event this past weekend and even prouder to support the mission behind it.

Shred Cancer is working to make a meaningful difference for students whose families have been impacted by cancer by providing opportunities to pursue higher education that might otherwise be out of reach.

Thank you, Shred Cancer, for the work you’re doing and for giving our community another opportunity to come together for a cause that matters!

Did you know our name, Shellback, comes from a U.S. Navy tradition?

Our founder, Matt Richardson, is a U.S. Navy veteran and proud Shellback—a sailor who has crossed the Equator and completed the legendary “Crossing the Line” ceremony aboard the USS Belleau Wood. To us, Shellback represents resilience, unity, and honor—values we bring to every project we build.

As we head toward Veterans Day, we’re celebrating the veterans and fellow Shellbacks who share this legacy. Drop your Shellback story in the comments or tag a friend who’s crossed the line, and we’ll send you a Shellback T-shirt as a thank you!
