Your hallway paint looks clean for about six months, then suddenly it does not. Scuffs near light switches, smudges by the front door, shoe marks along the baseboard. If you are scrubbing and the paint comes off with the dirt, the sheen is likely the problem, not the paint brand. Flat paint has almost no surface hardness, so it absorbs marks instead of releasing them. In high-traffic spots like hallways, mudrooms, and stairwells, a satin or eggshell finish gives you a slightly harder surface that holds up to cleaning without looking like hospital wall. It is a small choice at the start of a project that saves a lot of frustration a year later.
