🐝 TODAY'S INSPECTION: Yellow Jacket International! ✈️

It's that time of year! As the season winds down, yellow jacket colonies can be quite large, and activity around their nesting sites can be intense.

Seeing a yellow jacket or two while you're out and about isn't unusual. Seeing a couple dozen concentrated in one area? That deserves a closer look!

Today, while servicing a new structure for an existing client, I noticed an unusual amount of yellow jacket activity beneath an awning.

Rather than immediately treating what I could see, I stopped and watched.

After observing their flight patterns, I discovered what I can only describe as Yellow Jacket International Airport! 😂

In the first picture, you'll see a pointing finger identifying an approximately two-foot opening between the interior and exterior walls. Yellow jackets were coming and going like rush hour at Hartsfield-Jackson!

Further inspection revealed a substantial nest tucked between the wall's structural supports.

The second picture is the best I could manage. Apparently, the residents weren't particularly thrilled about my face interrupting their flight schedules! 😳

Because this wasn't a routinely occupied area, and with the homeowner's approval, I selected a slower-acting treatment designed to reach the colony rather than simply eliminate the yellow jackets immediately visible. I expect significant control within the next day or two, with follow-up to confirm.

The takeaway?

Pest activity often tells a story if you take the time to observe it. A few insects may be perfectly normal, but repeated activity concentrated around one opening can indicate something much bigger hiding out of sight.

Always be aware of your surroundings!

We’ve been seeing a LOT of seasonal rodent activity lately, and judging by what I’m hearing around town and seeing online, we’re definitely not alone.

So Beaugy figured it was time for a little Rodents 101.

Knowing whether you’re dealing with a mouse, Norway rat, or roof rat can tell you a lot about where to look, how they’re getting around, and what to do about it. Swipe over and Beaugy has a few simple things you can do around the house yourself.

And no, I’m not trying to work myself out of a job. 😂 I’ve been doing this long enough to know that the rodents will continue providing me with job security.

But sometimes making your home a little less inviting, properly placing a trap, and closing the right opening really is all it takes.

🐾 BIOLOGY WITH BEAUGY: What’s the deal with all these stink bugs?

Class is in session! Professor Beaugy says it’s time to talk about one of our most noticeable fall visitors: the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (Halyomorpha halys).

If you’ve noticed these guys hanging around your home lately, you’re not alone—and no, your house hasn't suddenly developed a stink bug problem. They're looking for a place to spend the winter.

🍂 WHY ARE THEY HERE?

Brown marmorated stink bugs spend most of the warmer months outdoors feeding on plants. As the days get shorter and temperatures begin to change, the adults start looking for protected places to overwinter.

Unfortunately, our homes look pretty inviting.

They gather on sunny exterior walls and work their way into cracks around windows, doors, siding, soffits, utility penetrations and other small openings. Once inside, they may settle into wall voids, attics and other protected spaces until warmer temperatures wake them back up.

🔎 HOW DO I KNOW THAT'S WHAT I'M SEEING?

The brown marmorated stink bug is roughly 1/2–3/4 inch long with the familiar shield-shaped body common to stink bugs. Look closely and you'll notice a mottled brown/gray appearance, light bands on the antennae and alternating light and dark markings along the outer edge of the abdomen.

And yes—they fly.

Sorry. I don't make the rules. 😂

😷 ARE THEY DANGEROUS?

Not really.

They're primarily a nuisance pest in homes, not a threat to the people living there. They don't infest the structure, reproduce inside your home like German roaches, or start eating your house.

Their real claim to fame is their defensive odor. When disturbed or crushed, stink bugs can release chemicals from scent glands that produce that unmistakable smell.

Our gentleman in the dunce cap apparently disagrees with everyone else's assessment of the fragrance. 😂

🏠 SO CAN YOU KEEP THEM FROM COMING?

Here's the important part:

There is no pesticide application that can stop stink bugs from flying onto your property.

If someone invents an invisible force field that prevents insects from crossing a property line, Beaugy and I will happily buy one.

What we can do is greatly reduce the opportunity for them to get inside.

Good stink bug management is an Integrated Pest Management approach. That means identifying and sealing potential entry points where practical, repairing screens and weather stripping, paying attention to gaps around doors, windows, soffits and penetrations, and using appropriately labeled products in targeted exterior areas where stink bugs are likely to congregate or enter.

Timing matters, too. Preventive work is much more useful before hundreds of stink bugs have already found their winter accommodations inside the structure.

If a few still manage to sneak through?

That doesn't necessarily mean your pest control failed. These insects can squeeze through surprisingly small openings, and sometimes the ones you see indoors were already hiding inside the structure and simply became active.

The goal isn't to promise something biology won't allow us to deliver.

The goal is to understand the pest, understand its behavior, and build the best plan around it.

And that seems like an appropriate lesson for our very first class.

🕵️ TODAY'S INSPECTION: HAVE PEST, WILL TRAVEL

A client purchased what she believed was a new refrigerator a few months ago. Unfortunately, she later discovered it was actually a refurbished unit.

And apparently, the refurbishment process did NOT include evicting the previous tenants. 😳

When I pulled the refrigerator out today, I found evidence of previous rodent activity inside the motor compartment — along with an active German cockroach infestation.

The really interesting part was why she hadn't noticed them sooner.

Inside the refrigerator housing were old food debris and several discarded noodle/flavoring packets. The roaches had food, shelter, warmth, and moisture all within a few inches of each other. They had very little reason to leave the appliance.

The treatment already in place was doing its job. I found dead roaches behind the refrigerator, and the live ones I encountered inside showed effects consistent with the insect growth regulator being used.

I removed as much of the food debris as possible and placed cockroach bait into appropriate protected areas inside the housing.

Thankfully, the appliance store has agreed to replace the refrigerator.

But today's inspection is a good reminder that pests don't always enter a home through a crack in the wall. Sometimes we carry them in ourselves — inside appliances, furniture, boxes, and other secondhand items.

And apparently, sometimes they arrive with snacks. 😂

You can put lipstick on a used refrigerator...but it can still have roaches.

It's not how we find it. It's how we leave it.

WHY I DON'T LIKE LONG-TERM CONTRACTS

I recently had a new customer reach out because she wasn't happy with the service she was receiving from another company.

I came out, took care of what she needed, and she was happy with the service. Unfortunately, when she tried to cancel with her previous provider, she discovered that ending the agreement early would cost her several hundred dollars.

So, understandably, she had to put her service with me on hold until that agreement runs its course.

Here's the part that really stuck with me:

She wanted to stay with me. But leaving her current provider meant paying hundreds of dollars just to get out of the agreement.

That's one of the reasons I've never liked the idea of using a long-term contract just to keep somebody as a customer.

I want you to stay with Tactical Pest Solutions because I answer the phone. Because I show up. Because I listen. Because I solve problems. And because when I leave your property, you feel like you received what you paid for.

If I have to point to a contract to convince you to stay, I need to take a hard look at the service I'm providing.

Now, there are times when an agreement makes sense—we need to be clear about what service you're receiving, what I'm responsible for, and what you're paying for. But there's a difference between an agreement that protects both of us and one that's designed to make leaving painful.

I'd rather earn your business again every time I pull into your driveway.

🐜 TODAY'S INSPECTION

If my truck suddenly develops a knock, a weird vibration, or starts making a noise it definitely wasn't making yesterday, I know enough to recognize that something isn't right.

But that doesn't mean I know what's causing it.

I might tell a mechanic, "It only does it when I'm accelerating," or "It started after I filled up," and something that seems completely insignificant to me may immediately point them toward the problem.

Pest problems can work the same way.

Recently, I was called to a home dealing with a sudden fly problem. The homeowner knew something wasn't right, but couldn't figure out where they were coming from.

During the inspection, we found some household trash that had been temporarily stored in the garage.

Nothing particularly shocking. Nothing that most people would look at and think, "Well, there's your problem."

But flies don't look at things the way we do.

To them, a little moisture, organic material, warmth, and a protected place can be everything they need. What looks like a harmless bag sitting in the garage for a few extra days can become an ideal breeding source under the right conditions.

And here's the important part:

You're not expected to know that.

Just like I don't expect myself to diagnose every knock or shudder coming from my truck, I don't expect my customers to understand the biology and behavior of every insect that finds its way into their home.

That's what you hire a professional for.

My job isn't to walk into someone's home and point out everything they did "wrong." My job is to figure out WHY the problem happened, explain it without making anyone feel embarrassed, correct what we can, and help prevent it from happening again.

Sometimes the solution isn't another gallon of pesticide.

Sometimes it's finding the one little detail nobody knew mattered.

That's why we inspect first.
