This is a 4 month old Siberian Elm tree. They love to grow along fence lines because the fences catch rainwater and funnel it down to them. This hardy tree will break cement sidewalks and driveways, get into sewer lines, get infested with elm beetles and caterpillars, and will develop wet-wood slime flux with oozes goop all over the trunk and onto the grass. We recommend being proactive about these trees while they are still young and can be easily removed. Since they grow 6 feet a year, forgetting about them for a decade means thousands of dollars in property damage and tree removal expense.

Tree trimming for safety and beauty.

As we trim trees we see a lot of broken or split limbs from last years wind storm. We also see a lot of hangers. A hanger is a limb or tree branch that is broken off and is precariously hanging from another limb or is wedged in a crotch of the tree. These tree limbs are a hazard just waiting to happen because at any minute they can fall. Hangers have damaged roofs, cars, and have even fallen on people and caused injury. It is best to remove them ASAP.

Split trunks or branches often get infected and slowly die. As they become infected and/or die the wood weakens and they are more likely to fall and cause damage to whatever is below the tree. These split or broken sections should be removed.

Lastly, when we trim, we aim to leave an aesthetically pleasing tree. Often this involves shaping the crown (top part of the tree). Each tree variety requires a unique way to trim and shape it. Most of the time we try to create a round oval or circle shape and we definitely prefer removing lower limbs that touch or are close to the ground. Last but not least, all the dead wood needs to go. It is ugly and like hangers and split limbs, it is also a safety hazard.
